How crappy is the powerdyne blower?
How crappy is the powerdyne blower?
There's a 96 Z28 vert at a local dealership with a powerdyne blower. Motor is bone stock and i'm wondering how long it's going to take for the LT1 to blow up from it. WHat kind of numbers do powerdyne blowers put down on stock LT1's?
Re: How crappy is the powerdyne blower?
Depends on the pulley size
If it's only a 4.5 lb (3.12") then you'll get like 2+ lbs of boost which is hardly anything maybe 30hp @ 15hp per lb of boost.
If its the 6 lb pulley (2.93") you'll get 4.5 lbs. which will be about 60 hp.
I've got the 9 lb (2.70") pulley with the extra fuel pump and FMU and I get 6-7 psi. which is about 100 hp.
I've got a Madwolf tune which has kept my engine alive for 10,000+ miles, but I don't beat my car alot since I put the SC on.
I like the 9 lb pulley cause it winds up fast in the lower rpms and gives me lots of torque.
The powerdyne is a whisper quiet baby blower.
If you buy the car don't pay much extra for the Powerdyne.

Re: How crappy is the powerdyne blower?
I experimented with a Powerdyne blower @ 4.5 psi absolutely street casual driving-never even went to the track, raced one person. I will say my experience was horrible. The power was nice while the thing worked (no dyno to back it up) put by 5300 rpm or so it was a hair over 4.5 psi according to my autometer boost guage. It was for sure more than the 30hp claimed above though and did reach full boost. 30hp is complete BS from my experience with it.
To make a long story short though within 2 months of install I had a horrible bearing squeall on the interstate and by the time I could get off an exit to investigate, my engine was bouncin off the rev limiter where I had to kill the car. Turns out the impeller blew apart and a shard of the impeller wedged my TB open. They sent me a replacement compressor which within another 3 months the thing no longer produced boost. That was it for me and Powerdyne. I assume their internall belt drive broke but I did not care. Luckily American Express was good to refund the money b/c (basically convinced summit to anyway) but PD wanted me to try again. They claimed they were having manufacturing/quality issues which have since been remedied. Whatever I was done. I have not heard of many people having such serious problems as I but I would not mess with them. I can say they did produce full boost at high RPM where many people say they dont reach full boost. This could be from not getting the belt completely tight which is a real trick.

Re: How crappy is the powerdyne blower?
My belt is tight and I also have a bypass valve which helps the internal belt live by not putting any reverse forces on it when the throttle is suddenly closed.
Without the bypass the pressure has nowhere to go but back into the SC and puts strain on the belt similar to twisting the kevlar cogs back and forth causing them to fail eventually.

Re: How crappy is the powerdyne blower?
My 93Z with stock internals and 4.5# Powerdyne dyno'd 352rwhp. With
6# pulley it dyno'd 380rwhp.
I had the Powerdyne on the car for about 3 years and had zero problems
with the supercharger. People will tell you that Powerdynes only put
out this or that amount of boost but about 3 months after I installed
the 6# pulley that little ol Powerdyne blew 7 of my stock pistons. I
think most of these low boost numbers are coming from guys that
haven't upgraded the collapsible intake tube or air cleaner. These
two mods alone gave me an additional 20rwhp on back-to-back
dyno runs.
I rebuilt the motor and had the Powerdyne for another couple of years
with no problems. I eventually sold the SC'r to another F-bud and
within a month he blows a head gasket and sells the unit thinking
he had blown his motor.

Re: How crappy is the powerdyne blower?
I can't believe nobody has suggested that you pull the breather and check for the chug-of-death...many a motor with blown ring-lands has been traded in. The Powedyne is a great entry level blower, but I'd be cautious of buying a used car with a blower on it...especially from a dealer, they're not going to know the history of the car. Be sure to take it to a qualified shop and have it checked it out first.
