Help with ignition?

OK. I'll admit. I don't really get the whole ignition thing. So help me out. Last year, I planned on going with nitrous, so I purchased an MSD Digital 6 at a buddy's advice (it's what he's running). Nitrous didn't happen, and now I'm thinking boost instead. Can I use the Digital 6 for this? It has ignition retard for nitrous, but is that different than what's needed for boost?

Somebody break it down for me. What is timing? Why do you need to retard or advance it? Why do I laugh every time I talk about retarding something? What's the difference between what is done to the ignition for nitrous and for boost?

Thanks.

I am not very familar with the MSD 6 Digital but for instance if you were running a 6BTM this would allow you retard timing on your car. The way it works is the 6BTM has a dial going from 0 to 3 ( I think). When you have the dial set at 1 it means that as soon as the car hits a lb of boost 1 degree of timing is pulled. SO if your car is making 8lbs of boost at WOT then 8 degrees of timing is being pulled at WOT. When your dial is set at 2 then 2 degrees of timing is being pulled per lb boost. Typically with boosted car it is important that your car not encounter detonation. So typically you can use something like a Scanmaster to monitor you car. If you are getting no knock then you can set the dial at 0. Hope this helps. You maybe able to run a BTM system with the digital 6 box but I am not sure.

So long it has the option for retarding it will be the same thing, but then again i know nothing about 6 dgitial. You need to retard timing due to increase of compression verses rpms and psi(boost). as you build more boost compression raises, and detonation comes then BOOM. Thats why our cars are not friendly to SC in stock form. When you retard or pull timing you are then able to run more PSI with out detonating. If the dial is set at 2 it is boost sensitive and would be pulling 2 deg time for ever pound of boost.

Hope that helps a little i suck at expalining stuff!

Had to make sure did not spell retard wrong
