File Fit rings on 383 SC

What are you guys setting your rings on 383 blower motors. My current set is: 383. 190AFR's, LT Hookers, 4" mufflex, 57# injectors, T-Trim w/aftercooler, and a TNT kit that I haven't sprayed yet. Probably some other stuff I forgot to name too, but anyway. See I'm trying to figure if mine weren't filed right cause my motor is getting blowby at 5500 and up and seeing 10# of boost, no more. I don't get any blowby at idle and none when I take the belt off the SC and run the motor up to 6400. The guy that did mine set the top ring at 20-22 and the 2nd18-20. I talked to the guys at JE/SRP and they told me they would set the rings at 26-28 for both. I have people telling me I should put a vacum pump on the motor, but I don't think I should have too.

Help. Fixing to pull motor and get New total seal rings and set the rings to the JE/SRP specs unless you guys got any idea.

For what it is worth, I have a 800HP turbo 355 motor with JE and Hell Fire rings. I set my top @.020 and middle @ .022 (oil ring no less then .015. It works for me. I would try to work out some sort of crankcase evac system if you can. Try using an LT1 smog pump to creat negative pressure under boost. You can use a microswitch on TB to actavate it or hook it up to a boost sensitive switch. Let me know if you need help with the electronics. I will draw out an electrical diagram and e-mail it to you if you like. If this does not help your blow by, time to do a leak down on the cylinders.

Evac system

I would really like to stay away from that for now. I already have enough going on under ther hood as is. Would that evac system make that much of a defference? I was told that the electronic pumps could only make 3-6" of vacum. I have been looking at the total seal rings and they claim to make 3-6"more vacum than over regular rings. Wouldn't you think this would be the better route to go. I have gotten mixed reveiws over these rings. I have seen another LT1 with these rings go estimated 50K with a blower (12#'s)/Nitrous combo. I seen this motor go 520 rwhp and with both power adders over 600rwhp with Stock interenals with the exception of pistons/rings and cam. The motor has been running strong until the blower upgrade. But the walls still look great.

Would you think that if I set the rings to the specs from the manufacture that would stop the blowby? Just trying to pick your brains guy.

Thanks GS355

You shouldn't need to go to an evac set-up.

Also, I advise against total seal type rings on supercharged applications as they don't relieve any of the pressure spikes caused by detonation.

I'm running SRP pistons with a .018 - .020" gap in the 2nd ring and a .024 - .026" gap in the top ring. I don't have a blow by problem.

How do you know you're getting blow by?

blow by

I know I'm getting blowby, cause when I hit 5500 plus RPM's I see tons of smoke, not fuel smoke, and smell the oil and when I pop the hood, my breather has oil coming out of it.

And yes I agree with your statement MIke that I don't need an evac system. Milke, how much boost are you running and what kind of cubes do you have. Mike is that the only reason you guys don't like Total rings. I've had a few people tell me that they were bad for the cylinder walls. But I always run race gas or pull timing with my BTM to prevent detonation. I'ld rather worry about blowing head gaskets vs. trying to figure out why my boost covering stuff up with oil if I had to choose, but I'ld like to fix it all together.

Thanks For input

Tons of oil out the exhaust it not normal, oil out the breathers is some what normal. This is why a lot of people run catch cans. Check your pcv valve, a lot of times these fail and start putting boost into the crank case. I would eliminated the pcv if you have not already.

Talking PCV Valve

I Checked it, and it seems to be alright plenty of rattle. I Blew in the end of it and it had a little bit of air leaking out but as the pressure got greater, the less the air leaked out. So, i'm going to ruled it out for now unless you tell me there should be no air leaking out. But I will buy another PCV just incase, cause I don't remember changing as long as I have owned the car.

I'ld like to get some input why people don't like Total Seal rings.

Thanks GS355

I'm running 14 psi non-intercooled boost on a 355.

In the works is a 12 psi intercooled 383.

I would suspect something is wrong with the motor. Perhaps there is a piston or ring problem. Or, it could be a head lifting.

I don't think it's the ring gap causing this.
