crankcase ventilation on boosted engine...

Hey guys..just getting all my ducks in a row for the build up and have been wondering what if anything will need to be accomodated for the crankcase ventilation setup on a turbo'd engine... I have seen some who use breathers, and soem who run tubes that vent to atmosphere..

does anyone have issues with oil being blown or misted out of breathers? if so how did you correct..anyone ran a hose back to the exhaust for vaccum to drop pressure in crankcase? just looking for input onsetups that have worked and what issues you ran into and what you did to overcome them. after elocating steering resevoir and A/C accumulator, hoses, cooling hoses etc etc etc..just wanna make sure i am doing everything right so this thing works. and wanna take car of it during the build so if anyhting drastic needs to be addressed it can be done with or without some of the other items in the engine bay for the cleanest install possible!

thanks again guys!

I'm interested in this as well.

On my stock motor, I put a breather in the valve cover and capped up the PCV holes to prevent unmetered air from getting in the intake -- probably not the best of plans, but it works.

Since this is on the street a lot, I do smell the crank case vent inside the car whenever the heater/defroster is on. I had planned to weld a crank case vent tube into the exhaust and run a hose up to a breather with a nipple on it for crank case ventilation... Is this a good idea?

What's everyone else doing?

You can run the standard evac setup. It works pretty well.

You can also plumb on the inlet side of the compressor. Procharger makes a marine inlet screen than I connected to some Moroso evac style breathers. If you have an inlet pipe before the air cleaner, you can do the same thing.

Here's a pic

wouldn't the turbo suffer from oil misting? this would not really be any different then the standard setup except it would have vacuum through out operating range vs. loosing vacuum to vent the crankcase underboost when plumbed to the intake. how is it working and have you noticed any ill effects?

I'm sure you could use a catch can or a breather filter to stop any oil from passing.

The new valvecovers for my setup have a 1.25" breather hole, so I'll be using the big moroso positive locking breather with a nipple on it for pulling crank case vent. I'm fairly certain that breather won't let any oil through...

I just didn't want to have to run a long hose from the top-back of the passenger side to the bottom-front driver's side. While the motor is out, I might bend an aluminum A/C type line to go around the engine bay out of the way of anything... 2 short hoses on both ends will be all I need then.

The Procharger setup worked real well on my old setup. I suffered with oil leaks before I put the kit on.

I've installed a standard evac setup in the downpipe of my current turbo deal. It hasn't proven to be real good but, I may need to fool with the tube placement to get the best vacuum.

I run a -10 aluminum tube on each valve cover, they vent to the ground. With the propar ring gap you should not have an oil issue
