Coolant temperature for blown motor?

Guys: What coolant temperature are you guys running with your blown motors? I'm running at 213 - 217 (100F) in stop and go traffic with a manual switch for the high spped fans and about 225 on the freeway.

i suspect this is hot. Anyone have any feedback for me to compare too?

Re: Coolant temperature for blown motor?

The blower shouldn't affect your stop and go and cruising temperatures.
It only adds heat when its making boost and that's usually only for seconds.
You don't say what thermostat you're running, 195, 180, 160?
My car has a 180 with 2 1/4 inch holes drilled in it (makes bleeding the system easier) and it runs hot at 210-215 up 3/4 on the guage. My trans temp guage also gets up to 210 and hotter if I beat on the car.
The car's not pinging under boost or overheating but I don't want to burn up the tranny.
I have a trans cooler also.
I have LT-1 Edit and have both fans set to turn on at 160.
I'm probably gonna put my 160 thermostat back in and may drill holes in it too if need be.
I think my rad needs some fin cleaning and maybe a flush and I have a brand new condenser for the a/c which has been cutting out occasionally and isn't as cold as it should be.
Hopefully that will bring my temps down to 180-190.

Are you running 213-217F with the fans on all the time? What intercooler are you running? Running one in front of the radiator will cause your temps to be higher.

Re: Coolant temperature for blown motor?

Yeah the car seems to pretty much have settled into to 210 - 220 on the free way AND stop and go. When I parked it yesterday the rad was gurguling away. The fans run all the time and in fact the temp got UP to 224 on the freeway with the fans on and DECLINED to 213 when I got into traffic. *scratches head*

I have the twin intercoolers which is its own problem because the air filter placement is an issue.

Any help or ideas would be great

Re: Coolant temperature for blown motor?

I have the same problem that you have! The only way that we are going to cool the temps down is to relocate the airfilter because with the twin highflow intercoolers the airfilter sits behind the radiator and the fans kick a lot of hot air back and down right on the airfilter resulting in higher than normal temps because it sucking hot to begin with. I am going to fab up some tubing to relocate the airfilter in front of the airdam by drilling a hole through it and placing the filter right up against the dam to dus make it recieve cooler air and not air from the cooling fans. This should make it run cooler temps. I hope this helps i will update!

Wow you guys are running hot, not hot hot just stockish. I have my fans set at 175-180 and the temp guage stays at the 1/8 mark, maybe the 1/4 in heavy stop and go.

Re: Coolant temperature for blown motor?

I too am going to relocate the filter in FRONT of the air dam but I'm not sure that will help the water coolant temps.

Lets stay in touch though.

Re: Coolant temperature for blown motor?

I took the top cover off that holds the rad and condenser today and the top 1/3rd of the condenser was totally plugged with dirt and leaves, paper and other crud.
It's an easy thing to check and my temps should be down now.
I'll know this weekend.

Re: Coolant temperature for blown motor?

After cleaning out most of the crud my car now runs about 190-200 and the trans temp guage reads 190. It goes a little higher if I run the air.
I have a 160 thermostat and a trans cooler. I have a new condenser I may put in as even after cleaning and blowing out the fins there's still some blockage and the air isn't as cold as it used to be.
However it's a big drop over the 220 the engine and trans were reading before.
I'd definately check for a plugged condenser and or rad at the top under the cover.

Re: Coolant temperature for blown motor?

Isn't 200 to 220 tranny temp relly hot with a cooler installed? 150 to 170 norm to me.

Re: Coolant temperature for blown motor?

I'm the same. There is no blockage of the rad. In fact I took the AC out at this most recent rebuild.

Re: Coolant temperature for blown motor?

The intercooler tends to block the airflow from the radiator increasing engine temps. ATI 2 & 3 cores tend to have this problem, whereas the twins do not.

Do not remove the undercar spoiler & lengthening it will also help force more air into the radiator.
