which charger

hey, im looking to get a supercharger for my car (in my sig.). I know its not safe to run lots of boost on a stock engine, but im gonna see if i can get away with it. I was looking at either the Procharger w/ the P-1sc and twin hi-flow IC's, or one of the vortechs. Im pretty knew to all this, and i was just wondering what supercharger you guys would go w/ to just run around 8psi. thanks in advance

Re: which charger

I have the same car as you and have been running the Vortech S-trim at 7 lbs. of voost for 2 years now. It has been a very reliable blower and has made very decent power. I am making 446 RWHP thru an A4 with ported heads and a small blower cam on 7 psi. of boost. The S-trim makes a very distinct blower whine, which I like a lot, but they also now make an SQ-trim, which you can barely hear if you want it to be more silent. So far, I have had no problem with the Vortech, it hasd been extremely relaible. Oh, and tapping the oil pan for installation is not hard at all. The s-trim comes stock with about a 6-7 psi. pulley, but can be pullied up to about 12 or more psi. if you build your motor up for it in the future. Goodluck with your decision

Re: which charger

I have the Procharger P1SC with the stock bottom-end, stock blower pulley, 212/218 cam, and cleaned-up heads putting down 514/466 through the stock 4L60E

It's a great setup and comes with an intercooler and a blower that is self-oiled (MUCH better IMO than a "shared" oil system). It's a premium piece that is great for power and longevity and can make a goddamned ton of power when pullied-down.

Don't believe me? Ask my neighbors

Re: which charger

Either s/c is a good choice. Just make sure you run an intercooler to keep the IATs down which would make it a bit safer for the stock pistons.

Re: which charger

yeah...im definitly gonna run a ic, cuz i know that will keep me safer w/ stock pistons. do you guys have any clue how much power i could get running 8lbs?? i know it would help w/ a cam or something, but im talking about just stalk, plus my sig. im guessing around 415-420 (of course w/ bigger injectors/better fuel pump)

thanks

Thumbs up Re: which charger

ProCharger P1-SC. A self contained unit is a better way to go. A "shared" oiling system puts hot engine oil through the blower... more heat... less power. In a "shared" oiling system, there is always a chance of something getting past the oil filter and into the oil line. If something makes it's way into the oil line, there is a possibility that it could clog the oil sprayer and prevent the internals of the supercharger to get proper lubrication. You could always install a secondary filter system for the blower and a true oil cooler (not the oil "coolers" that came on some LT1s). But that is a lot of effort and money when you could just buy the P1-SC. Plus... I am not a big fan of the "aftercooler" that the Vortech kit offers at an additional cost. On a street car, the "aftercooler" will become heat soaked. The heat exchanger is just not big enough to allow for better cooling.

Like I said, a P1-SC. Keep the boost at 6-8 psi. Make sure to do the supporting fuel upgrades at the same time. A good IN TANK fuel pump, new fuel filter, 42 lbs fuel injectors, and a safe and reliable dyno tune.

Re: which charger

Careful, 1000 miles on my stock engine and BOOM, on my Z. It's only a matter of time and boost is addictive!

Re: which charger

I think your horsepower estimate might be a little high for a relatively stock LT1 with around 6-8 psi. of boost. You can probably more realistically look to make around 350 RWHP with that set-up.

Re: which charger

At 8 lbs of intercooled boost, I'd peg the hp at about 390-400 rwhp with an M6.
