CC306 too much for blower?
CC306 too much for blower?
I'm planning on getting an ATI kit for my LT1, but I'm going through and freshening the internals before I do so, and figured I might as well swap cams, which is why I'm asking this. Is a CC 306 cam too much for a blown application? Should I go milder (lt4 hotcam) or go for the 306 and not worry about it?
I wouldn't use a cam like the 306. The HP peak will be above 6500, and you will lose out in bottom end and possibly midrange TQ (due to excessive overlap for a blown application).
If you are running a stock bottom end you will be putting a LOT of strain on it spinning it high enough to take advantage of the cam's profile.
I am sure RSkrause will chime in and recommend some gutsy XE lobe combinations for ya, or you could do a searh/browse in this forum to read about different options.
I use a cc305 equivalent cam in my low comp 383 and it peaks right around 6000 rpm (would be higher if I had an intercooler).

Spinner which ATI supercharger are you planning on buying? How much power do you want to make? Is this a stock bottom end?
If your are using the stock short block I would say you would be limited to about 450HP. If thats all the power that you are trying to make then why put a bigger cam like the 306 in it? Just quickly looking at the comp cams catalog and punching in the numbers in a program I have to see the opening and closing events of the cams I would say that the 304 or the 305 cams would be a better choice for you.

Comp Cams 224/236....114 LSA....Combination Motorsports was running a special on them a month or so ago, not sure if it is still available. You may want to contact them...CMotorsports.com

Going to be a P1-SC with the twin high flow intercooler pushing 8 psi to start. Educate me on the limitations of the short block, rather, WHY it's limited, how to fix it, etc. Or point me to a thread if you'd like. What exactly does the LSA rating stand for? I understand the intake/exhaust numbers.
Eventually I'm hoping for ~500 - 650hp in a very streetable daily driver

The shortblock is limited to the amount of power because of the parts used from the factory. If you stay away from detonation then the weakest link in my opinion would probably be the rods. If you get a little greedy with timing, boost, and pump gas then your pistons will most likely be the first to go.
The centerline for a lobe is the point where the lobe is at max lift. The lobe seperation angle is the intake centerline and exhaust centerline added together and divided by two. The LSA has a direct effect on the overlap of the cam, which is mostly what im looking at. There is nothing magic about a 114 LSA, you have to actually look at what the cam is doing. However with a cam this small 114 works pretty well.

Sorry I may have missed the forged internals part...the block itself will be fine. I would install billet main caps into your block. Also will you be getting ported heads? I would recommend Brian Tooley at TEA in bowling green Ky.
For the cam I would keep it pretty small around 212-220 int. duration/ 220-230 exh duration on a 114 with that amount of duration.
Hope this helps

FYI, I am running the hotcam. I have my P600B setup with the 12-rib belt and 12 psi rated pulley. Normally I see around 10-11 pounds of boost.
You need to at least change the pistons out. Beyond that, you could end up spending lots of cash.

Its really funny because about a year ago or so everyone was talkin how great the CC306 on a 114 was for a blower. Whats even worse, is that I called Comp on 3 different occasions and they all said that was their big blower cam.
I had it in mine....and I don't think I would put it back in there again.
Custom ground solid roller all the way
