Boost retard controller.. yay or nay?

I talked to procharger today and asked them a few questions reguarding their intercoolers. I run a vortech blower and im not a fan of there after cooler setup and im also not a fan of shelling out the money for a custom intercooler setup.. I have always like prochargers setup though. I found one on another local site and ordered it, that being the purpose of my call. anyhow, we were talking for about 10 minutes about the ATI twin intercoolers fitting the T trim and I came to the conclusion that it would work and we moved on and the ignition was mentioned and I asked if they put the boost timing retard on.. they said that their kits with intercoolers dont include one because its not necessary with their kits being intercooled. So im wondering now, should I run the boost retard or should I run the straight ignition system with the intercoolers? if your replying to this thread please include your ENTIRE setup so I understand fully what your running. including pulley combo, boost your seeing, type of intercooler(s), and brand of blower. Thanks!

Nick

The added spark from the box would be more than helpfull and the retard function is nice if you ever get ****ty gas.... look at it this way if the dial is at 0 whats the differance?

I heard that they still pull some timing even when its hooked up and at 0.. thats why im sceptical of putting it on. A few people have mentioned that to me.

Re: Boost retard controller.. yay or nay?

They aren't supposed to pull any timing until they sense positive manifold pressure. I would run one anyway with the stock computer since it has no way to sense boost. I set mine up at 1.5*/lb. This way I can turn the retard up another 1.5* if I get any knock from bad gas or on a hot day or what have you. I can also turn it down to advance the timing if I go to the track and fill up with some 104 octane or something.

Nick, if your interested i am selling my Accel 300+ igntion/box and also the 375 timing retard. The timing retard lets you retard timing in increments of .1 degrees. Email me if your interested.

Re: Boost retard controller.. yay or nay?

With an intercooler, I say nay. I run a MSD 6a with 8208 coil and a variable time control unit. Also, I have mapped the timing @ high load back to 29 to 30 degrees @ 100/ 90 kpa. Seams to work. Nice to have variable time control in the ****-pit.

Re: Boost retard controller.. yay or nay?

I run the MSD-6 BTM

I have never experienced a miss under load.

When I'm on straight pump gas, I'll dial in a degree or 2 of retard. When I put the "special mixture" in the tank, then the **** goes to zero.

It's just a little more flexible than a straight tune for boost program.

And BTW, I still have the stock timing map in place.

9 psi of boost at 6,300 rpm, "special mixture", no timing taken out = 559 hp
9 psi of boost at 6,300 rpm, pump gas .. 1.5degrees/# taken out = 535 hp

It makes a difference,

Hope this helps
