which is better?

i was wondering the advantages a turbo had over a supercharger and (vice versa--spelling?) maybe a estimate on hp gain on both setups

A turbo usually produces better power under the curve. And less parasitic loss.

A supercharger is generally easier to install and slightly less expensive.

There too braod of a range of things that can happen to give you numbers. You have to be more specific

When done correctly, Turbos are going to produce superior numbers...period. At least in the case of an all out build. However, price, and ease of instalation makes superchargers a good choice. Especially since they can priduce some incrediable numbers too.

Yo

Superchargers are better dammit... they are always giving boost and they don't need to cool down after long drives without the thought of them cracking. They are easier to install and that cool whine to it.

no offense chrisulrich, but i think you need to read up a bit before posting something like that...

centrifugal blowers do not give boost all the time. They have a compressor map very similar to a turbo. the turbo has the advantage here in that they can spool at ANY rpm, but centrifugal blowers have to be in the corrent RPM range.

roots and screw type blowers are producing boost at any time, but getting them on a 4th gen ain't easy and there are NO kits for it out on the market.

turbos have all the advantages here:

    Yo

Superchargers are spooling from the getgo... which gives power off the line, which is where the race is important. A good launch gives a good race. Yea Turbos have a nice nitro feel to it at like 3 1/2 - 4k. But wouldn't you rather have boost all the time. Now just because they aren't any out for the LS1's... it doesn't mean they aren't better. I for one didn't know that, because I dunno... L0L But I took his question in general, not for just LS1 cars.

Wait... 4th gen is LT1? Are you sure they're aren't s/c out there? I know some people have them, but now i'm not sure if its for the LS1 or LT1 models... L0L

okay... let's try this again. Centrigugal superchargers (Vortech, ATI, and Paxton) do NOT have boost off the line. They have impellers similar to turbos (which are also centrifugal). They have compressor maps with which require the impeller to be within an RPM range to work efficiently and create boost.

My car IS supercharged with a centrifugal supercharger. It does not have boost off the line. At about 3000 rpm, it kicks me in the *** and takes off.

The type of supercharger that does have boost off the line is the roots and screw type superchargers. Sure you can cut a hole in the hood and mount a 6-71 on top of a 1st and 2nd gen camaro, but the cowl in a 3rd and 4th gen will not allow it without serious cutting.

The only supercharger "kits" available for the 4th gen (LT1 or LS1) are centrifugal. They "spool" based on RPM. There are no screw or roots type (the kind that provide boost at any rpm) supercharger kits for LT1 or LS1.

Contrary to what you may believe, a turbo spools on load, not based on RPM. Turbos are powered by exhaust gasses and with the amount of exhaust flow on a big motor (these aren't rice burners ya know), the turbos will spool close to 1500-2000 rpm. You definitely CAN spool them up on the line and launch with a tremendous amount of boost.

There is one for the LS1, but it's for the vette.

3.5K-4K for turbo spoolup?? These cars's aren't small displacement 4 bangers. Full boost can be had under 3K for sure! Any yes I own a turbo car.

Roadie, you forgot to add a YO at the beginning of your reply

YO! Turbos are much better than superchargers IMO. Yes, I own a Vortech supercharged LT1 and I've ridden in turbocharged V8s. I know exactly what I'm going to stick on my 383, and it won't have a belt.

Hey Smoknz, I got my YO in there.

I think it all depends on what supercharger you are thinking about using . Turbo's rock , and do have quite a few advantages .

I , personally , would rather have a Procharger . But if there wasnt a procharger available , I think I would go with a turbo . Im not crazy for any other brand of Supercharger . I have driven in a few and was only impressed wth the procharger .

    YO!

I thought about that in my first post, which is why I said "4th gen f-body". Too bad it took 2 posts to get my point across
