bad cam for boost?

I know that duration is your friend with boost, to keep up velocity, but I already have a GM 847 (234/242 .585/.595 on a 112) and I'm looking at a STS kit... I'm just throwing this out there, I haven't built the bottom end yet and I'm not looking to go down the track, just want something fun to play with that sounds mean. (kinda like a blonde)

112 is not the best for boost...114+ is what you want

but my cam is cut on a 112 so hey....it works well for me..

Re: bad cam for boost?

Most are a little too quick to overgeneralize that 114 is "the way to go" for a blower cam. It really depends on a lot of other factors, like exhaust flow of the heads vs intake flow, type of exhaust, amount of boost, etc. I am no expert who knows exactly how to do this precisely, but it's really about targeting the correct effective compression ratio for the amount of boost you want to run. Many say "don't use a Hotcam w/boost because of the 112 LSA" but in reality it may be fine (not optimal, but ok) if you're not using a lot of boost and your exhaust ports/system doesn't flow all that well relative to your intake. In a case like that the hotcam isn't bad because is has a fairly big exhaust bias to make up for the not so great exhaust and wouldn't need a really wide LSA for less than 10 PSI. Lots of people use the Hotcam w/a small blower and stockish heads with good results. Remember, overlap is not all about LSA ...it's about the comparison of LSA to duration. IMO the cam you suggest has too much duration for a 112 LSA, that's a decent bit of overlap. Sure it will work, but it's not optimal at all. Crap, I just realized you're talking about a turbo cam though ...that's a little different but I'm no expert. I believe that may be too much exhaust bias to be optimal for turbocharging (most stockish turbo cams don't have bias or only minimal bias from what I've heard). In a way it seems like exhaust bias would be good on a turbo cam ....more time to push exhaust through to spin that turbo .......
