Anyone Measure Power Gains with Vortech Aftercooler?

I've done searches for this and I can't find any information on how much power or track time people have gained by adding the Vortech aftercooler. I'm on the brink of buying one and I still can find any definitive reviews on them.

Anyone care to report their gains (or losses)?

Thanks,
Mike

A buddy of mine (Vortech 396) put on on his Z and he picked up power across the powerband. The HP increase was only about 15 hp but the torque increased by about 50.

This was on a 396 w/ T-trim

His "E" mail is camaro3z28@aol.com

Send him an "E" mail and he'll give you the details.

He does have a website but I can't recall the link do a search for vortech 396 as he might have details on the website.

I dont have any dyno #s, but I bought one and love it. before the aftercooler the hp seemed to go way down as the engine came up to normal temp. after the install my power stayed the same all the time. I went from a 14.5 1/4 time at 103mph to a 13.3 1/4 mile time with just aftercooler and tires.

note: im not saying an aftercooler will drop your 1/4 mile time a second, but it keeps the engine intake temps so much cooler and with much less if any detonation. good luck

He's from Utah, i'm guessing it has something to do with the elevation.

I was kinda' looking for rwhp or quarter mile trap speed increases.

I've heard as low as 10 and as high as 70 rwhp.

that is going to depend more on IAT temps more than anything.....throw some ice in and go the track and you might be able to gain that much, around town with warm water or so and it'll be lower

Brook....I would think that by the name....96z28/93ta....that it was a v8...unless you have seen a 6cylz28 or t/a before.

how high are you in utah????

brook
4400 ft but NHRA factors can be from 7000-11000 depending (gotta love the Great Salt Lake and its effects on air quality).

Stock LS1's usually run mid 14's here...96Z28, you should really get your car checked and tuned.

I have CAI, Hooker LT's, stock heads, hotcam and 1.6 rr's, 3200 stall and 3.73's and ran a 13.36 up here and that is with some serious valve float.

Unless the S/C is the only thing you have done, you should be running faster...and trapping much higher if anything.

I did notice some gains with my buttometer... I will dyno test very soon and let you guys know...

One thing I didn't like was that my IATs where 150s!!!!! during traffic...

Damn .. I need to get some fans on that thing!!!!

I will be doing some engine dyno testing soon, and here is my plan......
1) non-intercooled
2) air to air
3) water to air (std. aftercooler)
4) water to air (using ice)
5) add n2o

I plan on optimizing each phase, as well as see what gains or losses are incurred with just the intercooler change. The engine will be a 383 using around 18 psi on race gas, so the gains may not be typical of an average street set up. I suppose you could convert the gains to percentages to calculate theoretical gains if you know your current HP.
I'm not sure of the timeframe that this will be taking place. I had planned on doing this last week, but customer workload seems to continually push back my personal projects. I will post the results, or a link to them in this forum when I have them. The testing plans above are obviously a simplified version of everything that will actually take place. If you have a suggestion to add to our list of varibles...... I'm listening

Joe....

i like your approach but you can't simulate the air rushing across the air/air that it would be seeing while going down the track. Even if you have 3 giant fans if front of it, it will be difficult

But do it anyway and post the results. Should be interesting
