about how many miles will a supercharger last?
I DO NOT MEAN how many miles will the engine last which is being supercharged. I DO mean, how long will the supercharger itself last? I guess i'm just asking out of curiosity. my car is just sitting in the garage for the winter and i'm beginning to get the mod-bug
. i drive alot in the spring-fall seasons, this is why i ask about mileage.
thanks,
Michael.

It all depends on which blower you are talking about. From a quality perspective I think Vortech makes some of the best blowers. I know people have gone 36,000 + miles without problems while other have gone a few miles before a blower rebuild (pretty common problem with the leaky P1SC seals).
I have a P1SC with about 35+K miles on it with out any major problems. the first 20K miles were only with a 4.5# pulley and now the other 15K miles is with a 15# pulley setup but I see 10# of boost with my 383 combo. I do have some oil leaking issues but I have had them since the after the first 2 weeks of having the blower. The P1SC procharger has proven itself to be pretty reliable and quiet (well quieter than most blowers anyways) so far.
Hope that helps,
Claude

The biggest problem with the P600b usually occurs when you try to push it too the limit. If your goal is to make big boost then the P600B is not for you.

also, my car is stock other than the catback. are headers NEEDED? and also, i do realize a bottom-end buildup is recommended for any boost at all. but is'nt this just because of the 10.5:1 compression ratio? i'd like to drive the car stock for the summer. and then put some lower compression pistons in it if it's as simple as that. am i making any sense?
i'm not looking for 500hp. i'll do that in a few years when i buy my vette....just looking for a cheaper alternative to hold me off till then!
I've got 50K on my Vortech S-Trim and it's still going strong! The first 35K miles were 6#, then I pulleyed up (7" crank pulley) to 10#. The only failure I've had with the blower system is the belt tensioner pulley (not the pulley on the blower). The kit comes with a plastic pulley that wore out in about 15K miles. I found a replacement pulley made of steel that works just great.
I have a P600b from ATI, I got it rebuilt at 95,000 miles. It was still good, but had a small oil leak so when I rebuilt the motor I did the blower also. So for me it was several years and 95,000 miles.

i was going to try to buy a new system in the summer if i get my engineering internship but now i see a used one for about 1/2 the cost that would suit my pockets a little better.
what should i look out for when buying used? also, what is a fair price?

[B]no i just want to make around 400hp. so, what would that be, like a 9# pulley?

Unfortunately it is not as simple as that. Other than the blower there are other things you are overlooking such as plugs, wires, retard box, tuning and monitoring system. A motor rebuild is not going to be cheap either. It is important that you understand how much money is involved when you go the blower route.

well i've been watching one on ebay. does vortech make an intercooled system? that's what i liked about the ATI one, it's intercooled. i don't know alot about SC's, that's why i want to get one, i like to learn by experience!

I also forgot to say, that the blower was put on at about 20,000 miles. At the time of the rebuild the motor had 114,000+ miles on it. And for the HP # you are looking after are those at the wheels or flywheel? Because if you are looking for flywheel 400hp then a blower with proper tune at about 8psi(intercooled) should do it. The rear wheel HP#s in my sig are before I put on a exhaust, headers, and it was at 2500ft on a 95 degree day in the high desert of Southern California. In any case I would say ATI makes a great product, in the past they had issues with customer service and it was very hit or miss. Also Vortech makes good stuff, but I have a problem with how they operated in the past, so I would not buy from them. In any case good luck.
I have 35,000+ blown miles on my stock engine, with 6psi. This combo will get you 114mph 1/4 mile trap speeds in a 3800lb car. With suspension and tires, you can expect very low12's on premium pump gas. If you want more boost than 8psi, then you need to strengthen the engine internals.
