396 stroker or 355 procharged??
396 stroker or 355 procharged??
Hey, I have a 94 camaro z28 m6. Next summer I was planning to get a 355 procharged. I just want something for the streets. But dependable. I still plain to get the 355. I want soemthing that can put me maybee high 10 low 11's. A guy told me he had a 396 stroker and ran high 10's in his camaro. Is it possible to get those times on the motor without force induction or nitrous. I cannot make up my mind. I like the blower sound and power it makes. But I think the 396 stroker with a really aggressive head/cam package and 4:30 rearend will please me also. Which project will run me less money. Anybody know what combos in a 396 stroker will put me there

If you have the cash to go with a blown 355, then it may be a good idea.
396's are great, but your margins are getting thin and there is a LOT of machine work involved.
Whereas you could prep the stock block and crank, get some decent rods & pistons, and you'll have a pretty sturdy blower motor that can reliably make more power than you'll ever manage to use on the street,
In short; I think it'd be more cost effective to go with a blown 355.
Just my opinion of course.

Re: 396 stroker or 355 procharged??
if you want 10's...
383ci heads/cam and boltons would do it for you. might want to consider a 9" or 12bolt rear aswell...slap some slicks on it and go to town. you would need roughly 420rwhp to run a 10 i would think...my buddies car puts down ~360 and he is solid 11.60's with 1.5 60's...its all about getting outta the hole hard.

Right now I have all the bolt ons like the 58 throttle body, headers, etc, etc. I plan to upgrade to a 12 bolt rearend. I wanted a 355 procharger motor. I know thats gonna run a pretty price also. I was thinking taking a 396 stroker or 383 really aggressive cam, heads combo and a 12 bolt with 4:30 gears on slicks. I think I would be happy with either. I just thought a 383 or 396 would be allot cheaper then a blown 355. Because a supercharger with labor and all is going to run close to 5k.
Re: 396 stroker or 355 procharged??
I don't think it would take a "really aggressive cam/heads" to get a 396 into the 10's. I had a carb'd '89 with an 11.3/1 383, AFR 210 RR's, 847 cam, Victor Jr., and shorty headers that ran 11.0 at 123 mph on pump gas, full street weight.
Keep in mind, simple is good. Less parts to break and easier to work on when they do.
