383 and P600B procharger?

Hey guys, I am thinking of going this route but is my head unit to small to run 12# on a stroker motor? I think I will be close to exceeding it limits. 15# is out of the question huh. I don't want to upgrade to a D1 just yet. Also is there pistons available in the -30cc range with a 6" rod for the stock 58cc heads? I was looking on cmc website and they had just 5.7" rods with that dish. I would like to keep the c.r. around 9.0-1. Please let me know what everyones thoughts are on this. Thanks.....John

Re: 383 and P600B procharger?

A P600B with decent heads/cam will only make around 10# with the smallest 15# pulley. The D-1 will make around 18#.

Not sure about a 30cc dish w/ a 6" rod. There may be rod to piston interference.

You could rework the heads to 65cc chambers & run a 16cc dish for approx. 9.2:1. This will get you close.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Lonnie, but will I be over turning the blower with a 15# pulley? Would the p600b still be effecient with that setup or just create to much heat? Thanks again for the advice...John

ive turned vortech s-trims well past their absolute max (and waaaayyyy over max effiecient) without an intercooler and the power continued to climb. you have an intercooler, dont worry about it.

I would highly recommend against overspinning the P600b. If you do good luck on the blower rebuild and motor rebuild. I had a 15lb pulley on my p600b and from experience can tell you it is very inefficient for a setup like yours. Your best bet would be to save up and go with a D1SC.

With the 12psi pulley on my 355 I only saw about 10-11psi... so with a 383 it would be even less. The 15psi will over rev the P600 if you get into the 6500rpm range. I wouldn't go any smaller than than D1 if I were you.

Yes JE makes a -31 cc dish piston for the 5.7 rod but they also make a -28 cc dish piston made for a 3.75 stroke and 6.0 rod. My setup is going to be about the same as yours by the looks of things. Except I'll be running a s-trim with water injection at about 10#'s. I think the part number of the piston is 170817 and with a 58cc head you'll have 9.2 to 1 compression.

Re: 383 and P600B procharger?

Thanks for all the info guys, I'll keep reading up, and save my money for a D1. Does anybody off hand know what the price would if I exchange my p600b for a D1 unit? Thanks again....John

The P600B is good to 6600rpm w/ the 15# pulley.

There is no trade in for the P-600B to the D-1.

Thanks Lonnie. I was just looking in my procharger book to find the formula. What size is the 15# pulley? About how much is a brand new 8 rib pulley?

It is a 2.55", but you can forget about using an 8rib. The small dia will even slip w/ a 12 rib setup. Not enough belt surface area on the small dia pulley for traction.

Re: 383 and P600B procharger?

I'm actually running a 383 with a P600B, and like they all say, it only pulls around 10#, I haven't had any over revving problems, but i'm usually pretty careful about stuff like that. The p600 is plenty for me, the car is a daily driver and occasional strip car, however you will probably be happier with the D1, but I doubt you'll be disappointed with the p600.

Re: 383 and P600B procharger?

The D-1 is much better suited to the 383. Actually it is better at achieving max boost than a D-1SC due to the 4.44 internal step up ratio.

The same motor achieving 10# @ 6500rpm w/ a P-600B will make about 18 w/ a D-1. The D-1SC will be close, but the minimum pulley size limits the max boost ratio for lower RPM usage (under 6k).

Re: 383 and P600B procharger?

I have a 383 with a 6" rod. I had a 12 psi pulley p600b on it. The belt contact was very short even with a 12 rib. I rolled the small key on the driven side. Lucky I found it. The p600b has a very small key and (I think) a 5/8 shaft. The D1 has a dual key and a 3/4 or 1" dia. shaft. I like the D1 much better with the 4.44:1 stepup. I'm runing a 12psi pulley now, and, I have a 15psi pulley I've been thinkin of. I think 15 psi is to much for my 9.5:1 comp. ratio.

mzgp5x Thanks for your reply. What kind of numbers where you making out of your P600B? What did you see on your boost gauge? What heads and cam? Thanks.......John
