Are 3 set screws enough to hold balancer hub on crank?

I have a newly installed D1sc on a 94lt1. The tuner suggested I have the hub drilled, tapped, and three set screws installed to pin hub to crank - crank also notched with drill bit to engage set srews.
Will this hold as well as a hub machined for a key?

Damn, that's a good idea. I'd never even thought of doing something like that, but it'd probably be easier overall than notching the hub.

As long as you make some sort of indentation on the crank snout for the set screws to snug in to, it'd be pretty solid. Probably not as solid as keying the hub with 2 slots for two woodruff keys.

I just keyed my hub on mine, I know that thats not going anywhere, id be worried that the screws would back out on you from vibrations if they back out and spin on the crank that would be a pain to fix.

How is that easier than keying the hub?

Its easy as I drilled my own holes, and used helicoil inserts for threads. I dont have a verticle mill to cut a keyway in the hub, or whatever machine that takes.

Why did you use helicoil inserts? Why not just tap the holes?

Theres only enough room for 4-5 threads, and I wanted good full depth strong threads. Cast iron is hard to tap and i've had better luck with the coils. kiss principle
