14psi Reliable

Hello all, Looking at a 97 SS w/ a 14psi Procharger. My question is, can the car be reliable w/ this kind of boost? The motor is completely built with forged crank/blower pistons, MSD timing **** in-car, ported heads, etc, etc. There is $14k in reciepts for the motor and $4k for the built 4L60E. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Re: 14psi Reliable

Also forgot to mention it hasn't had a dyno tune, but runs extremely well. While I'm on the subject, how do I locate a tuner in my area w/ LT1 edit? I'm in central, CA. Thanks again

Unfortunately, Turlock is in the middle but not close to any tuner; I've been there a couple of times

If you are looking to buying the car, then make sure you check it completely or have someone else check it completely unless you can trust the guy who is selling it. Don't buy a white elephant.

First question - is it reliable
1A. to the motor
Hard to say and depending on how you drive and what you do. However, it is extremely important to get it dyno tune before you romp on it at all. Even with the strongest motor, detonation and running too rich or too lean will kill it. Also, without dyno tuning you will never run it to its fullest potential. While it is not dyno tune, it is definitely not reliable. Also, reliable is really relative - a race season or a couple of years with some fun on the weekend.

1B. to the tranny
. . .

In terms of tuner, call them and talk to them in details. It's very important that you guys understand each other and come to an agreement of what you expect. Also visit www.norcal-ls1.com

Wow thanks for that reply....you're the man! Actually, those are all just over an hour away.....just a short cruise! Do you have a favorite out of those shops and what am I looking at $$$ wise for the tune. As for the condition of the car, I've known the car for a couple years now and it's definitely the most pampered car I know of. Luckily, there are only 300-500 miles on the motor and transmission, it hasn't been touched since it's just an extra car for the current owner. As for it's future use with me, it'll be cruised to work 1-2 days/week and raced @ the track maybe once a month (on street tires until I can afford a 12 bolt). Again, thanks for the reply, I appreciate it!

Re: 14psi Reliable

the car, motor and tranny sounds great.

My preference is probably with Keith at FFP. He has a load compensating dyno with real time A/F reading. For our cars which we are running higher boost, I like the fact that as you are dynoing your car, you can let off when the A/F get about 14 (lean!). On a DynoJet, you can't really do that that well. Secondly, LJ helped Keith dyno tuned my car at FFP.

Prior to dyno tuning and since it is a 97 and probably has the OBDII computer, I would highly recommend not going beyond 4500rpm in case you have the maxing MAF issue (really bad for OBDII). At 14psi, you should be experiencing fuel cutting by half at 4800rpm unless the previous owner solved this already.

Also, prior to dyno tuning, you need to make sure you have enough injectors and fuel pump to handle your power or else there is nothing they can do at the dyno tuning session. Many of these questions they should clarify with you when you call them.

You are probably looking at $350 - $550 just for dyno tuning, that is if they don't have to do anything else with the car which may bring the cost up more.

Forgot one more shop who can tune but does not have a dyno http://www.teamzr1.com/ (John).

I would highly recommend Jeff Creech

It seems like you are a day late on this dyno tuning session. If you are lucky, Jeff may still be here. He may be coming to the Bay Area soon too

Tell them, Hugh Lam from the Bay Area sent you.

cheers
