Want A Louder Muffler For My Z
Want A Louder Muffler For My Z
I won't be able to afford headers for a long time but want my car louder at all ranges - idle, cruise, WOT. Basically I don't like that I have to drive relatively hard to hear it, but I realize this probably isn't easily achieved without headers.
So I've got some ideas, tell me what you think, or know is loud.

Classic Chambered "Power Sticks". Now if I understand correctly, the shorter the stick, the bigger the sound, this could be a cheap band for the buck.

Another good priced chambered muffler.
SLP LoudMouth - I heard this on LS1 sounds, sounds pretty good, there was only one on there that was an LT1 and it helped that this 96 Z was stock. It sounded just a bit louder than the flowmaster I have now.
Any other ideas?

Did you mean to say before the muffler? I'm not a cheap ***, I just literally cannot afford what I really want (GMMG).
Thanks for the suggestions. I think I may go with Sweet Thunder. Though I must say, I looked under there today and there didn't seem to be much room in the I-pipe. I only looked for a second but my I-pipe is turned, not sure if it would matter if I just put that chambered stick there and just re-routed it a tad so it all lines up.

I would go with the loud mouth. This is an exhaust pretty much for people not running headers who want that musclecar sound. I've got full exhaust on my car, heads/cam, and many other add-on's and with the LM it's pretty much like running open headers..definately too loud so just go with the LM1 until u get headers.
i ran with just the stock cat and strait pipes and got complements all the time. then i stepped up to pacesetter long tubes, ory, and a tsp rumbler exhaust which has no muffler, just a big resonator. i have a vid somewhere of it my car if your interested.
generally lt1s have a nicer sound then the ls1s, i think a catted lt1 with the loud mouth 1 sounds really nice. without a cat i think its a little too raspy tho. i do have an lm1 resonator ill sell if your interested,

its no problem. sorry i havent been on here in a while heres the car:

keep in mind its being filmed from a car with closed windows flooring it, my cars loud.
i actually ended up using my resonator for my 3rd gen so sorry about that. but if you want to loose your muffler and use a resonator its not completely simple. the muffler is a single inlet/duel outlet, and its located behind the rear end. the resonator is single inlet/outlet and its located on the i pipe ( under doors of car). if you want to loose your muffler your best bet would be to just have a single exhaust tip instead of the 2.
btw the video description is not completely accurate, i did not put that vid on there. my friend did. thats with pacesetter longtubes, ory, and tsp rumbler exhaust.

It's okay, I keep going back and forth on it anyways....worried I'll like what I have now more than whatever I put on in the near future. You're right about it not being simple. I was thinking of using one of those short chambered mufflers, like a glasspack, but they are obviously 1 in 1 out. I don't wanna do single tailpipes. I finally got a Z and I want to proudly display dual pipes! Any ideas on how to make that work? Should I just remove the muffler and weld a straight pipe instead, and mount the chambered stick wherever?
Thanks for the video, lol that is loud. I'll post up how loud mine is later on.

A cutout would be perfect for you I think. Get it welded in just after the cat. I had that on my Z before the duals and thought it sounded pretty good. This was you can close it if you wanted/needed too. Chopping the muffler off would work too I suppose. Strait pipes out the back tend to sound more raspy/ratty then the cutout because the sound is aiming strait back, while the cutout would be muffled by the ground just a bit.
I've heard both in person, and would go with the cutout
The Magnaflow catback is also a really nice sounding setup, and it wont break the bank. You'll get a mean refined tone out of that, plus nice looking slash tips. But nothing can beat the sound of headers and true duals
