Rochester, NY Exhaust Inspection Questions

I moved up here 3 years ago from PA, but I never paid any attention to the inspection requirements up here. My wife's unlce works in the service department of a local dealer, and I've always just dropped off our family car and picked it up after work for our inspections.

Anyways, now that I own my '97 Camaro; I'm considering my options for aftermarket exhaust systems. I have a exhaust leak on my driver's manifold and it's getting worse.

So, before I seriously sit down and consider what I want to get, I first have to know my options.

1) Are long tube headers completely out of the question even if I get them with all emissions fittings and run cats? Even if I can get her uncle to pull some strings for me as he's friends with most if not all the service techs there at the dealership?

2) Do we have a sniffer test and would I pass with say Pacesetters, all emissions, catted Y, and magnaflow?

3) I know we have OBD2 readiness scans (as my Hyundai failed one before), so would rear O2 simms pass this test?

I really don't want to get stuck having to do the MAC dual cat system for 96-97 cars, but it is the only system I found that keeps both cats in the stock locations. Also at around almost $900 for it coated, when I could be spending that money on things way better... ya know.

I was told to try their 95 midlength headers and convert to a single cat set-up but at that point doesn't it seem like I'd be moving as much stuff around as just going with long tubes?

Thanks for helping me guys, this board hasn't let me down yet. You all rock!

well here's what i can tell you... you're unlucky that you have a 97 because they hook it up to the computer, if any codes come up you will fail but O2 simms should get rid of any codes so you should be fine there

technically you CANNOT move the cats from stock location, it's illegal BUT if you have family at the shop you may get away with it, I will have LTs on mine with a cat after the ORY but one of my best friends is head mechanic and passes me.

we do not have sniffer tests that ive experienced or heard of.

They do have sniffer tests now in NYC and surrounding counties. You should be fine in Rochester. On the NYS website, it says nothing about cats being in the right location..

Anybody have problems with cat locations before on an inspection?

I haven't seen any sniffer tests around here either. I had my Z inspected last spring and all they did was check the standard things. I don't know if they looked under for a "visual" of the cat. I've been driving mine with a gutted cat (soon to get an ORY) and haven't had any problems yet. Technically, I think i saw on the NYS-VTL website that you can't modify an exhaust system to amplify the sound any more than it would be from stock. but i've never seen that enforced unless the car is obnoxiously loud..

Thank you all for replies, I still havent decided on what I want yet vs. what I can fit into my budget. I might even have to wait for a GP of some kind or a special.

As far as any visual is concerned my uncle said he would take care of any "problems", but I still have to pass the OBD2 readiness diagnostics... no big deal though with O2 simms.

o2 sims will work as long as your car has no codes and readiness monitors set....as far as inspection and exhaust go....ny does not allow any alteration to tle exhaust and locations and cats are required......now i am/was an inspector and i can say its hit or miss.....most shops/echanics around here dont realize that it needs 2 if you have 1 cat on and speaking for my self unless its a real pos{or ricer}i could care less if the car has no cats if its a real car...but thats me...i can tell you my car has no cats and lts on my car but i no longer inspect so i'm in the same boat as you at the end of the year
