LT headers, 3" Y & intermediate pipe with stock muffler?

I have a set of LT Kooks with 3" catted Y pipe and Corsa exhaust. It does sound very nice but it's louder than I anticipated. I'm getting a little too much attention from the local suburbian police when I get it out. How much power do I stand to lose putting the stock muffler back in? I've got head work, cam, TB etc. Work done and don't want to lose much of the HP I invested in. Anyone else running a full header/3" exhaust through a stock muffler?

The stock muffler isn't going to fit without adapters.

Perhaps try a different aftermarket muffler in its place- A magnaflow might be a little quieter..but I can't say for sure since I haven't been able to compare the two side by side.

As far as your power loss, I would venture to guess there would be some- but hard to say exactly how much....

Thanks. I realize I would need to reduce from 3" to 2.5" on the muffler inlet. I just wondered if anyone had done it to see just how much power loss was involved. I am very hesitant to do it, just curious. I understand the quieter it is the more restriction is involved. Would a resonator ahead of the muffler be more effective with less power loss?

JETMAM, I sort of have the same problem Pacesetter LT's, catted feeding a Corsa Catback. The Corsa was not to bad till I added the headers and removed the Cat. In reality the Corsa muffler is just a SS chamber with a couple of baffles, very loud w/o the Cat(s) I was thinking about a set of high flow cats to maybe quiet it down a little and get rid of the exhaust stink you get w/o cats. Problem is clearance to floor panel to fit the cats. If you do something post up the results...

Bob I have the high flow cats and it still is pretty loud and tends to pop and crackle on deceleration in gear. (My car is an M6) My least expensive/simplest resolution seems to be a resonator ahead of the muffler in hopes there isn't too much flow restrictriction. I'm hoping someone chimes in that has had a similar experience with a resonator taming the sounds without killing the power we work so hard to make.

IMO, first try contacting Corsa technical support at 800-486-0999, it can't hurt!

If that doesn't pan-out:

Install a Magnaflow 3" in/out 4" dia. muffler in the I-pipe; pt# 14419, or buy a magnaflow cat-back and sell the Corsa.

As an update I called Corsa and they didn't have anything to offer other than to say they thought I was on the right track with the resonator idea. They just suggested I talk to a competant muffler shop to have one fitted due the tight area below our cars. Anyone used a 3" probably oval resonator with any success?

You might throw a cutout on it before your muffler if you go back to a more poor flowing catback.

Personally, I'd consider the sound and performance you want before buying the exhaust system. I love my SLP 2OTL, it flows good, and is pretty tame. I sometimes wish it had a hair more grunt (Pacesetter LTs, 3" ORY, SLP 2OTL) but that's only a cam swap away.

Re: LT headers, 3" Y & intermediate pipe with stock muffler?

I had no idea what to expect sound wise out of a full long tube set of headers, heads/cam in conjunction with a Corsa catback. I'd read many positive reviews about the Corsa (with stock exhaust) but unfortunately I knew nobody that had that combination to listen to before buying. I'm really not interested in a cutout since I doubt I ever get it to the strip, and just trying to tone it down somewhat without crippling the power I invested in. I would just like to tone down the existing sound a few decibels in order to keep a lower profile around the local suburban cops. It does sound very cool as it is, if I just didn't have to deal with a Police Station 2 blocks from my house. I don't want to spend my money in our Mayors traffic court.

A resonator might tone it down some. If it were me, I'd swap your Corsa muffler out for a Magnaflow muffler. I heard an LT1 Z on youtube with LTs, ORY, Magnaflow exhaust, and a cam/heads and even with all that it was relatively tame compared with most other setups I've heard.

I have the Borla xs pro 40474 muffler with long tubes and no cat. It is very quiet. I've ran it at the track and only lose 1 MPH through it as opposed to the cut out open.

Re: LT headers, 3" Y & intermediate pipe with stock muffler?

A Magnaflow system will reign in the sound a reasonable amount, as compared to the Corsa. I drove a friend's 02 SS that had a Corsa swapped on in place of a LM1, and it really wasn't any quieter. Car had a Hot Cam and SLP longtubes, but otherwise stock.

On the flip side, my buddy has a 94 TA with a 383, AI heads, XFI 467 cam (I believe,) running through Pacesetter LT's, ORY, and a Magnaflow catback. It's much quieter than the LM1 it replaced, and relatively tame if you're just cruising.

For as good as Corsa systems sound on Vettes, I have to say that I'm not impressed with the sound quality they produce on an f-body. Damn transverse muffler!

MysteryBird your Borla sounds pretty quiet and might be an option over a resonator. Does it pop or crackle when cold or decelerating? At idle my Corsa sounds similar to your Borla but revved up it sounds more like yours with the cutout. Did you have any mounting/installation issues at all? Are those your OEM exhaust tips? Thanks for all of of you guys input.

No popping at all, no mounting issues, and no the tips are Pypes brand I got off Ebay for like $20.
