Header Length Question

Hey all,

Looking to change my exhaust setup. EVERYONE talks about longtubes. However my research indicates that mids or shorties are better for upper end. All I care about is the 4500+ RPM range since any street driving is minimal. Should I stay short or go longtubes?

Further, is a true dual an issue referencing scavenging? I assume the headers will give the scavenging I want but I am not sure.

Any input appreciated.

Ben

what research are you seeing?

seems every discussion i've ever read says that LTs lose power in the low end and build power in the high end.

LTs are better than shorties and mids in just about every aspect accept ground clearance and emissions legality

Here is one article I read that is stating the opposite of what you are saying. This is why I am so confused.

Emissions are not an issue for me but ground clearance is. Bottom line is I don't want to be missing out on 20 HP if I can design my next exhaust correctly.

definatly seems odd.

but i guess my question is this.....if long tube headers hurt power up top....why are they on race cars?

You see, I cannot wrap my brain around this one! I need to do more research.

Please, others speak up.

Torque falls off at high RPMs with LTs, not horsepower. You are basically shifting your power band from high RPM torque for more high RPM horsepower.

I've always heard that shorties and mids do more for low end torque than horsepower, long tubes are what you want.
