which header gaskets are you using?

I had a set of percys, the carbon/steel ones, and they worked good, until I bottomed out on a speed bump. SO I figured I would try a set of copper ones this time. First problem, and I didnt think on this so its partially my fault,......they gave me d-port gaskets designed for an LT1. Now you might think thats a good idea, but its not,.....the D port does not drop low enough to seal on the round tube header flange. Its like the dumb bastads designed the gasket to match the port on the head exactly. I did the hard side first just sliding the gaskets in and did realize it then, but when I got to the driver side and pulled the primary #1 pipe out and looked closely at the gasket I realized the burn marks showed me where the header overlap was and that these gaskets were not going to seal because they're not crushin the raised lip D seal. I have Hookers headers by the way. Of course when I finishde and started the car, it did what I thought it would, leaked on the bottom sides of every port.

That being said, what are you guys using successfully? Are you using regular round port design gaskets for SBC, or does someone actually make better D-port gasket that more closely match the flanges of these headers? I dont want to waste another day doing header gaskets.

I use Earls header gasket. They are kinda pricey though if I remember correctly.

when i got my pacesetter LT's they came with the cheap "paper" gaskets and got the copper LT-1 D-port design gaskets. They leak at the same spot as you blown94

I have the percy dead-soft gaskets are good, and not to hijack, but wouldnt they be hard to put on compared to slipping in the copper ones?

Maybe call hooker and tell them what headers you have and if they can send a pair of copper ones that match the headers?

well, I found a set of the percys aluminums at autozone with the circle port so I figured I would give them a shot. I tell you those jet hot headers suck on the passenger side. Especially when you have to do it twice in one week. The bolts are so tight against the tubes you can barely get a 1/4" drive socket on some, and cant even get the closed end of a thin wrench either. At any rate, they seem to be sealed now, although I wasnt able to use the tool steel lock washers I had on b4 as the bolts weren't long enough to get started to crush the gaskets the first time. Ill have to keep an eye on the bolts and make sure they dont loosen up. I did notice the passenger side header seems to have a lot of load on it from the exhaust system which cant be good for them. Ill have to look into that more, I think its a fitment issue at the y-pipe. Thanks for the replies guys.

Have you run the car yet with the new gaskets? It almost sounds like you got an LS1 type gasket, not sure if that would lead to any potential exhaust leaks.

That's what I thought too, at first, but the LS1's center primaries aren't right next to eachother like the LT1's are. I doubt he got LS1 gaskets, he'd be able to tell right away that they wouldn't work.
