exhaust cutout size and placement

just ordered a magnaflow exhaust for my car yesterday and have never really heard one in person but if its anything like my truck i know it will be fairly quiet, which if its like that inside the car im cool with it lol. however, i do want to put a cutout in it when i install it for the good times so where do most people put them and does anyone make a stainless one? also what size do i need3" or 3.5". thanks in advance

Well from how you are explaining it, you want it more for noise then for anything else.

SO, I would put it right before the Catback. (assuming you have no cat converter) If so, Id put it right before the converter.

As far as size, use the same size as the pipe you have. No need to go any bigger.

*May want to check your state laws, some states it is illegal to have cutouts*

well i want it for performance when i do get to go to the track. the exhaust that i have on there now is just so loud inside the car n when i have my lil one in there she hates it lol. at the same time tho i do want the noise side of it sometimes so i want to go with a e cutout. i was gonna put it between the y pipe and catback but didnt know if that was a bad move or not as far as fumes coming in the car n stuff?

For the most performance you would want them a specific distance from the headers. That way they work like a header extension. The distance is determined by several things. Personally I wouldnt worry about all of that with the way you are describing what you want.

You may or may not notice any difference in performance when it is open verses when it is closed. The magnaflow catback flows very well. On a dyno there may be a slight change, but not really enough for you to tell while driving on the road.

There is always a possibility of fumes getting inside the car when any pipe ends underneath the passenger compartment. The further back (and the closest to the side) will help prevent that from happening.

On my S10, my cutouts are directly under the passenger seat. I havent noticed any fumes inside, but I usually have the windows down anyways.

I would recommend a manual cutout for now. The electronic ones are expensive and you might find out that you really dont want the exhaust as open as you would think. I rarely open them on my truck. And if you decide you want an electric valve, you can easily upgrade from the manual ones.

I would just put it right before the catback. It is not the optimal place, but it will work for what you are wanting.

For maximum performance you would install it much like a collector extension on a drag car. The exact placement has many factors to consider. For your application, that would be overkill.

lol well i know as of right now it wont make or break me but im in process of building and thats my main thing is for "future" reference. i'm shooting for high 10's on motor. building a 383 and if things work out some trickflows but may end up with just the AI ported stockers. so im just trying to figure out where i need to put it while im installing the exhaust cause i dont wanna have to cut it again is all. guess i should have been more specific from the jump lol

The most fool proof way, other then on a dyno, is to go to the local track with straight headers. Bolt on different length collector extensions and see which produces the best results. The downside is that you may need to make slight tuning changes with each extension. Once you found which worked the best at the track, you would want to put the cutout in a spot where it would mimic the same length as the extension.

It all depends on the motor and how you are going to use it. No place in the exhaust is going to be the "perfect" spot for all applications or uses.
