Does anyone run the cat only?

I'm just curious how many people run with the catalytic converter only. I took my stock muffler off and fabbed up a pipe so I could keep the dual pipes. It's pretty loud at WOT. It really isn't that loud in the car. It's a different sound, but I like it.

I did something similar with a V-6 Fiero years ago. 1988 to be exact. It had a really short exhaust anyway but I put dual Super Trapps on it. Once the diffuser discs went bad I just removed them. It sounded like a V-8. Everyone like it. It was a deep rumble.

I can imagine your LT1 sounding really good like that. Not sure how it affects off the line torque though.

I always kinda liked those cars. I've heard some that sounded pretty good too. Too bad they quit with them.

The 84 car w/4 cyl was junk but in typical GM fashion the final one in 88 was finally getting where it should have been all along;just think what if they had the newer 3.6 or even the 3.8 w/s.c in them.Killing the car just when it was getting good though is another boneheaded move by GM

GM seems to do that, like with the camaro and firebird. I know sales were down but quit with icons? I always thought it was a bad move. They could have done limited production or something. No more anniversary editions.

Anyone else run with the cat only?

Sounds like a weird idea. Why not get rid of the cat and get a better flowing muffler.

I was going to replace the cat with a muffler in its place but I couldn't find what I wanted at the time. The cat has that rotton egg smell so it won't be too long before I take it off. I can't see spending $70 to $100 on a muffler. They're overpriced in my opinion. I was looking into a thrush welded($30 to $40) but they didn't have a 3" center in center out. How would one red cherrybombs sound on an lt1?

How about an 18" long $19 Summit round muffler?

Or their 24" long version for $29

Also Hedman Hedders has a couple 3" for $36 to $42

Thanks anyways 1987IROC350, but I think I'd rather go with a chambered muffler. I like the sound of them better than the glasspacks I've heard. But for now, it's the cat only. I think I'll wait to run exhaust when I do the LT and duals. I don't want to spend money on something that I'm going to take off anyways. I could use the money for other mods.

then get a single chamber flowmaster or a moroso spiral flow. not all single chamber mufflers are glasspacks..

i ran strait cat for a month then just a cat with full exhaust/no muffler and it sounded good but it toasted the cat

Sry to hijack, but I am running a 3 inch straight pipe catback exhaust with no cat. It ran awesome then i put midtube headers on it and it runs like crap now. Is this because I have no back pressure. Its a 1995 camaro with a single cat. The headers are mac mids. They are chrome.
