Catalytic Converter Placement

Would putting a catalytic converter in the i-pipe (end of y-pipe) cut down exhaust smell?

I don't have emissions checks but I want to cut down the smell of the exhaust. My headers have emissions hooked up (A.I.R. and EGR). Would the cat get hot enough that far back to do any good? thanks in advance

With the cat that far back, it most likely won't get warm enough to be fully efficient emissions wise. If you are only after cutting back the smell of the exhaust, it should help in that regard.

It needs to be as close to the collectors as possible.

You could put the converters in the trunk, it won't change the smell of the exhaust. To make them work correctly though, they need to be as close to the engine as possible.
