Emmissions testing in Tennessee

Hey, I was wondering if you could pass an emmissions test with long tube headers in Tennessee. I know the last time I was in there all they did was check my gas cap and read the pcm for trouble codes. They didn't even look under the car, pop the hood, or put the sniffer in the tailpipe. I am pretty sure I could have passed last time I was in there. Now I hear that they are putting into effect stricter laws. My buddy with a 3/4 ton 94 GMC truck was previously exempt. Now he has to get it tested.

depends on what area you live. IN the memphis area you hafta get checked but if you are in the county you are exempt. the EPA has been running around lately makeing everyone clean up and whats cool is the surrounding counties in Ark and Ms are helping as well by keeping themselves in check. there are talks of going county wide with testing but nothing official. if they did that they would hafta build about 8-10 more facilities as the 3 they have are always over ran.
so all in all it depends on what area you are in.

Shelby Co. (Memphis) has it, as does Davidson Co. (Nashville) and the surrounding counties of Rutherford, WIlson, Sumner and Williamson.

The state just announced a couple of months ago that the program was expanding to Knoxville and Chattanooga.

Typically doesn't involve an under-hood check. They'll look for a catalytic, then give you the tailpipe test for 95 and older and the OBD2 PCM check for 96+

last time I was there they just did the PCM scan and didn't even look under the car for cats. If I have my computer reprogrammed to delete the AIR and EGR programs, will they be able to detect that? It won't be throwing any error codes, since those computer programs are deleted along with the AIR and EGR being removed.

Re: Emmissions testing in Tennessee

They will fail you if you have more than 2 of the 5 continuous readiness monitors set to "not ready" in the PCM.
