You've NEVER heard gear whine like this! VIDEO INSIDE!!!!!

This is video of my friend Ricky's car.

After four sets of ring and pinions, the shop still can't figure out why his car eats up gearsets. This is its most current condition. Long story short, the shop doing the work had NO idea what they were doing, and robbed him out of almost $500 in labor, WHICH he has since gotten back and taken to another shop. Anywho, onto the video.

Once again, that is NOT supercharger whine.

Wow, that is the worst I have ever heard... Sorry to hear you got screwed by the shop but at least you got some money back. Setting up gears is definately an art that most shops can't replicate. Goodluck and I hope this new shop knows what they are doing.

I'd check under the hood. Seems like the shop got the wrong work order and accidentally installed a blower. That could explain why you're blowing the rear end now...too much power.

That sounds horrid I hope you get it taken care of!

Those are silver ZR1s with 275s on all four corners.

Well, just got the news back from the new shop I took it to, and my dad was there to witness them taking apart the rear...

It's the worst they've EVER seen. Housing has been bashed with a hammer, the bearing and shims are beaten to hell, the play in the gears was over 1/2", the backspacing was almost non-existant, the gears they "replaced" with new ones were the SAME OLD ONES, and the u-joint seems to be battered a little bit as well.

There isn't a little smiley face on here to explain how rip**** I am. The shop is going to do whatever they can to try to save the rear, but if it's not to their liking then they're gonna give me a call. This shop I DO trust, it's Tom Oates Chevrolet in Chester Springs, PA, and they have a race team and are a specialty high-performance Chevy dealership. Their race mechanic is doing all the work and he did the rear perfectly in my friend's 98 SS...so I'm just hoping that it can be salvaged.

I've never felt so used.

12 bolt...

Once you factor in the price of the rear end parts and labor, you're well on your way to a 12 bolt which will be much stronger and reliable.

I had the same problem with a shop also mine was so bad that a friend behind me on the interstate with his windows up the person he was talking to on the cell phone could here it.. I have a pretty loud stero system in the car and no matter how loud i turned it up i could still hear the whine.... I took it back to the shop and at first they said it wasn't their fault.... But after some discussion they decided to fix it and put a new gear in....The gears still whines a little....
