Won't downshift

I put this here because it may be a sensor or something engine related.

Car won't downshift into second if im going over 35 mph. Any idea what would cause this? I believe the car has 3.23 gears. I was told to drive in third gear at 70 mph and whatever the rpm is, is what gears i have. This is in my 95 z28 a4. Thanks in advance.

Re: Won't downshift

Did you scan if for codes? There are numerous codes for the transmission, and they don't turn on the SES light.

Did you check the service parts tag for the rear axle code (GU2 = 2.73; GU5 = 3.23)?

I did not scan it. I will, as i do have the free software from here. Also did not check for the axle code. I thought all a4 came with 2.73?

Re: Won't downshift

It is GU5. And there are no trans codes.

The standard rear on the Z28 with the A4 was 2.73. There was an option (GU5) for a "performance rear axle", and that got you 3.23's.

If you hold 3rd gear at 75 mph with 2.73'S YOU WILL GET 2,735 rpm, with 3.23's you would get 3,235 RPM. That's assuming the 25.7" tires (245/50-16). If you have the 26.1" tires (235/55-16) you would have to drive at 77 MPH.

Cool. I didn't know that.

So what does that do that makes it different than my TA with the 2.73's?

Re: Won't downshift

If you want, I can move this to "Drivetrain" where Frank from CPT may be able to answer the question.
