will a 96 m6 rear work in my 97 A4?
If you are doing a complete housing swap, it should work fine. You will have to bleed brakes and have the computer re-programmed for the gears. The amount of time it will take will depend on your experience level.
You may want the 2.73s back when gas is $3+ a gallon.

If you are just yanking yours off and installing the M6 rear, should take 90-120 minutes. Air tools will help out a lot, but aren't required.
If you have disc brakes and your calipers are still good, you won't have to remove the lines from them, just try and keep the hard lines that run along the axle housing from bending and remove the one bolt that holds the hard lines to the housing.
It can be done with 1 person, but 2 makes it much easier.

Yeah, I mean the whole thing-all inclusive.
As said, if you want to keep your brakes, you can float them off your old rear and put them on the new one. Then you won't have to mess with any bleeding.
