I was thinking about dropping my rear end and painting it with POR-15 or something along those lines. Who here has done this, and what would you reccommend using for paint? Also, with POR-15 is there any prep work needed, or just paint it on right over the rust?

I am going to install gears and a stud girdle, and I don't want to have a pretty girdle on an ugly rear end, you know what I'm saying?

 

your going to need some rust removal.

I painted my 12 bolt. I just taped everything off. gave it a good once over with a sanding cloth to get it all smooth. cleaned it off. shot it witt primer, sanded, primered again, sanded, primered for a 3rd time. then I used some engine enamal paint for the paint coat. shot it, sanded, shot it and sanded, shot it again and sanded again and then shot it once more. I debated a clear coat but didn;t end up doing it

 

That looks really nice. So should I sand it down to bare metal and then primer it? Did you just use paint from a can? Or an air compressor? Also, was your primer hi-temp, or was that just your color coat?

 

i painted mine with por-15 during the winter

i used a wire brush, cleaned in with the marine clean, and prepped it with metal ready (both por-15 products), then 2 coats of por-15 with a brush

i just wanted to clean it up while i did the bottom of the car, i wasn't too worried about sanding it

How much POR-15 (paint) did it take you to do your rear end? Would I be fine with 1 pint, or would I need a quart? Thanks.

 

i bought a quart of each, and have tonnes left, even after painting the underbody too

 

So I could most likely do 2 coats on the rear end with a pint?

 

yep

i would suggest that you use the cleaner and etcher as well

 

What are the benefits of using each, and how much would I need?

 

the cleaner does a good job of removing any grime and grease of the metal, and the etcher allowes to paint to better adhere to the metal, without it, i heard people complain saying that it flaked off.

i did the front spindles a year ago when i did a ls1 brake swap and they still look like the day i painted them

 

I used Hammerite paint on mine. It's designed to use on rusty stuff. Just wire brush of the loose flakes and paint. One coat only. Looks good even after 2 years.

 

I've never heard of Hammerite. Where can that be found? Got any pics of your rear end?

No pics and I got the paint at a Sherwin Williams paint store.

 

Do you really need por-15? I am getting ready to do mine....i figured just some higher temp paint....since the rear gets pretty hot when you run it hard and just rattle can it?? This along with all the prep work of sanding and such. I have it real close to bare metal.....what paint should i use?
