where to jack to get tranny up
i'm going to try and change the tranny mount myself. i need some tips on where to place the jack to raise the tranny w/o breaking anything. also what do i do to change it? thanks
Re: where to jack to get tranny up
I highly recommend having a buddy help you.
My friend and I just did my car last weekend.
We used jackstands on both sides of the car so we could get under it and just put another jack on the bottom two metal pieces on the back of the trans. right before it meets the driveshaft. Just unbolt the crossmember, the main center bolt and the trans. will move down about 1-2 inches and rest on the jack. Then install the new mount, boolt everything back up and you're good to go.

Make sure you use a piece of wood on top of the jack to avoid messing up the trans. Take the nut off of the mount first, then jack the trans up JUST ENOUGH to push it off of the crossmember. Then take the cross member off.
For either trans, putting the jack as close to the mount will lessen the strain on the engine mounts. For an auto, you can jack it up by the pan, but use no less than a 2x6 piece of wood about a foot long to make sure you spread the load out evenly. Again, don't jack it up any higher than just enough to clear the cross member... any more and you're just putting undue stress on everything.
It took me about 20 minutes to change the mount, FWIW. Good luck
