Question What's this noise???

I have a clunking noise like metal hitting metal under my car only while giving it gas in D. I took it to a shop and they said it was the driveshaft, that the u-joints were bad. Had them replaced and $150 later I drive away only to have the same noise there still. I take it back, he looks at it he said in gear on the rack accelerating and said it sounds like it's coming from the middle of the DS. So I buy another aluminum driveshaft off ebay, through it in, and it's making the same noise. Now what do you guys think? It sounds like metal to metal hitting. As I speed up, the noise speeds up. Do you think it could be something in the tranny or rear? When I drive it, it drives fine. It's just this noise. What If I take the DS out, put the car in D to see if the noise is still there coming from the tranny maybe? Is that safe? What's a safe way to be under the car while it's jacked up and having it in gear to see if I see anything or if the DS is hitting anything?

Re: What's this noise???

I doubt it is the torque converter. It could be the transmission, but I don't know what would make a clunking noise while in gear (as appose to going into gear). Put the car on ramps, or a lift, and something safe so you can get under it. Take the inspection cover off the torque converter. It's four 10mm bolts, not hard to get out. Then look at the flexplate/torque converter. Look inbetween the engine and flexplate with a flashlight. Your flexplate might be cracked. Mine had similar problems/symptoms. Here is what my broken flexplate looked like.

And out of the car

Would mounts make a noise while giving it gas in drive? And speed up with the RPM?

Re: What's this noise???

is it safe to remove the DS and put the car in gear to see if I still hear the noise? To see if it is something with the tranny or TC? Fluid won't come flying out or anything?

Re: What's this noise???

Ok, I jacked the car up today to try to see if I see it hitting anything, and it's not. At first I thought maybe the sound was coming from the rear end, so I topped off with lucas dif fluid, and noise still there. I even put the car in N and spun the wheel while under to see or hear anything, and nothing. Didn't even hear anything now. I also notice that it clunks a little going into gears. I'm kinda leaning towards the TC now. It's a vig high stall tc that I bought off here from someone last year. If it is the tc which i'm not even sure yet or would know how to find out, how does their warrentee work? Let me know what you guys think? Even with the noise putting the car in gear. I noticed also that while the car is in Reverse, that the noise isn't there. Only in all the forward gears, OD,D,2,1.

Re: What's this noise???

I don't know if this helps at all, but today I took the DS back out and put the car in D and gave it gas, and NO noise now. Could that rule out tranny or TC problems? What do you guys think? I miss my car and this is very frustrating.

If It Only Clunks While On The Ground It Is Your Tranny Mount Because It Is Doing It WHEN There Is Pressure On That Mount They Are 30 Bucks Get A Decent One And Dont Worry I Have Had To Replace Mine 3 Times If You Race It Will Break
