What stall and gears this summer??

Well 2 winters ago i tore my engine apart and put in a 224/230 cam, all new valvetrain, electric waterpump, long tubes, true duals, etc....
The car is WAY faster, obviously, but i am running the stock convertor and gears in the rear (2.73)!!
I know the convertor and gears need to be replaced but im not sure with what. I am on a budget, i have a jeep that need building and a boat that needs to get paid off. I plan on going to the track 2 or 3 times a year, and the car is not a daily driver.
I think the cheapest/easiest way to go would be to take the rear axle out of a wrecked car with the 3.42 gears in it, and get maybe a 2800 stall??
what do you guys think??

OBD1 seems to have difficulty accepting anything more than a 2800 stall. many people have been having problems with that. I'd say 3.42's and a 2800 stall. u can run 3.73's if you want, but then you will have to pay someone to set them up or buy a used rear with 3.73's already in it. 3.42's work out nice with a 2800 stall. I've got a friend running 12.39's on 2800 stall, 3.42 and a hotcam (other bolt ons and et streets helped get this time)

thanks, i think thats what i will do. I found a 3.42 axle at a junkyard here for 300 bux. a Little steep, but still cheaper than a gear install by far. Any other input?

Re: What stall and gears this summer??

junkyards around here wanted 450 for a 3.23 rear with 75k miles on it, id say your junkyard's deal isnt a bad deal at all. especially considering gears are around 125? and another 100 for an install kit, and another few hundred for the install by a pro itself.
