I believe the output shaft is a different length along with the driveshaft.

Poorman, its actually the input shaft that is different I'm pretty sure. The output shaft is the same spline as earlier years and the same length or at least very close to it. Thats why LS1 driveshafts work fine in any LT1 car, M6 or A4.

The 94-97's were made by Borg Warner, the 98-02 were made by Tremec. It says it on the barcode label on the top of the trans or by checking the green metal tab label on the side. The 94-97 is the stronger more reliable trans, it seems to hold up to more abuse than the newer LS1 T56's fwiw.

Re: what s the difference in a lt t56 and a ls t56

I was talking to a guy yesterday who said he had the T56 in his 02 SS replaced in under 5k miles. Then he went on to say some other guy who was apparently 5 cars behind/forward from his car on the assembly line(not sure how he got that info) had his tranny lock up on him within like 30 miles! He also said my T56 with nearly 100k miles and a few missed shifts felt smoother than his which is practically brand new since he never drives his car. So it seems the Tremec version of the T56 has some reliability, quality issues. In fact I remember a while back I drove a 00' Z28 with 30k on the clock and the 2nd gear syncros were already shot.

Yeah, I've heard of a lot more problems with the Tremec's. The drivetrain section of LS1.com used to be full of complaints about them. Popping out of gear, syncros going bad, bent shift forks, 3-4 shift problems. If I were looking for a T56 for my car I would try to get a 94-97 T56 for sure. Also when they switched to Tremec in 98 they began building them in Mexico, fwiw.

So an LT1 T-56 will work in an LS1 (and vice-versa) but the input shaft needs to be changed. Is that the only difference? (and is that very difficult to do? ).

.....just asking 'cause I've thrown around the idea of doing an A4-->M6 swap, and a buddy and I were discussing the 2 trannies, and unsure of all the differences.

so the input shaft is differant cant you use a the clutch /pressure plate for that trans and bolt it up this is the quistion and a new shafy is only 225.00 the only reason im asking this is i git a 96 t 56 im thinking about selling was wanting to get the scoop on it first it needs a shaft bearing and 3/4 sycros there not bad or i ll say real bad still goes in gearto rebuild it or the parts are only about 300.00 what is the trans worth as is now

I believe the LS1 trannies also have a different bolt pattern, as well as the longer input shaft.
