Replacing the existing tranny in a friend's 1984 Z28. There are apparently 2 different lengths of 700R4 with the Camaro having the short one. What other cars have the shorter tranny?

Also, if you are rebuilding it anyway, does it matter if you use the older model(which I am told is much weaker)?

Late '80's 9C1 Caprice's (cop cars) used the short tail shaft 700R4's. You can also get the tailshaft to convert any long tail shaft to a short tail shaft. It was GM part#8673406. I'm not too sure if that's still a valid part# though.

I had a friend who used one from an '80s 4x4 Suburban. Not sure if he switched tailshafts, but the car ran 10.30's w/ it in there.

All 700R4's in Camaro's & Firebirds are the same length, the Corvette's are about 1" shorter, and use a different tail housing. The only other one is a 4WD type, which has no tail housing.
