WHAT HAPPENED???? clutch pictures

I pulled my car apart today and found my pressure plate separated along with all the friction material blown clean off the center part with the springs. The clutch only had 10,000 miles on it and it still had plenty of material left. What do you think happened? Let me know if the link worked or not.

Re: WHAT HAPPENED???? clutch pictures

I was doing about 55mph when I pushed in the clutch and shifted into 3rd gear. I had been hearing noise for quite some time but could not pin point where it was coming from. The throwout bearing was still working good when I pulled it apart. This makes me believe I need a new input shaft bearing. But then again it could have been a defective clutch.

Re: WHAT HAPPENED???? clutch pictures

It looks like the cover was defective and cracked. When that happened, the clutch started slipping. then, it just started to cime apart.

Re: WHAT HAPPENED???? clutch pictures

No, I just had the clutch in and slid the gear into third, I heard the syncros meshing/spinning up and then crunch. I had to kill the engine because of all the vibrations. I think the crack in the PP came from the clutch spinning so fast and smashing into it.

Re: WHAT HAPPENED???? clutch pictures

In all honesty the input shaft has a bit of side play. But I had a good pilot bushing.

Re: WHAT HAPPENED???? clutch pictures

Are you sure you were engaging third and not first? Hitting first would explain nearly everything. This would seriously overspeed the clutch disc and could easily cause it to explode and the shrapnel could break the pressure plate.

Re: WHAT HAPPENED???? clutch pictures

You know, I just might have done that. Hey would a worn input bearing and pilot bearing cause this? Because of vibration.

Re: WHAT HAPPENED???? clutch pictures

A worn input bearing or throwout bearing shouldn't really cause a vibration in the first place, so likely no, it probably wasn't the source of the problem.

Re: WHAT HAPPENED???? clutch pictures

I did hear something vibrating for months before it happened. only when I push the clutch in and the trans is in gear, while the car is rolling. So this makes me think some sort of bearing was causing the noise. Hopefully it wasn't the cause of the clutch failing.
