Question What does a torque converter do?

What exactly does a torque converter do? How does it make more power? Were is it located? Would it be worth doing to a near stock LT1?
Thanks

Re: What does a torque converter do?

A TC acts like a clutch in an automatic equipped car.
Its located between the engine and the transmission. A higher stall torque converter won,t make more power, it lets the engine rev higher to get into its powerband quicker. basically with a six speed car you can dictate at what RPM you want the clutch to engage, a higher stall converter does the same thing for an automatic.

theres alot more to it like torque multiplication but I am trying to keep it simple to start with.

There are alot of people on this site who can get very technical if thats what you need but I get the feeling you need to start with the basics.

TQ converters basically put your motor at a point where it is making more power. As a very rough anology... imagine that the TQ converter changes the gear ratios to multiply TQ and put more power to the ground.

Re: What does a torque converter do?

a torque converter is a fluid coupler
a clutch is a friction or mechanical coupler

the torque converter connects the engine to the transmission using fluid, tranny fluid

the torque converter slips alot at idle, because if you are not going anywhere, and u connect straight to the engine, the engine doesnt go anywhere (it stalls), once off idle the torque converter engages the tranny and power is transmitted, the fluid is used to couple the engine and tranny

Re: What does a torque converter do?

Cool thanks. My tranny already kinda does that. When Im in first and take it to 5k or so and let off it doesnt wind down it is like it throws it in nuetral and when I go to step on it, it doesnt put it into gear untill it meets the engine speed. Not sure why it does it but it recently started it.
