What causes a rear end to scream?

Like the title says...
Mine started SCREAMING yesterday... when i say screaming I mean an incredibally LOUD whine.
Have to speak with a raised voice in the car to be heard...

What causes this?

Well I went to check the gear oil.
Couldnt feel it on my pinky anywhere. I pop the cover off. I get a good deal of oil out of it though. 2 inchs deep in a 12x7 pan.
I ran my magnetic pickup tool through it and didnt find much by way of shards of metal or shavings...
All of that was stuck to the magnet on the cover. It was just small shavings....

The ring and pinion looked to be fine.
There wasnt any chunks missing or anything of that nature. The posi... well im not sure what to look for but nothing looked out of place.

Could it be the bearings on the axles making these noises? or the ring and pinion?
I plan on filling her up with new gear oil and LS additive and seeing how she sounds. If shes still whining i guess ill take it to a shop unless someone has a good idea here....
Plz help gear experts!!!

Thanks
-Eric

If it is whining that badly, one of your bearings could be bad. Mine did the same thing and it was the pinion bearing. Several of the rollers and bearing raceway was pitted badly. That was the thing that was making all the noise. They replaced all the bearings in the rearend.

the fluid change didnt help at all, theyre too far gone.
I had a shop look at it today.
They said it was the wheel bearings so theyre replacing them.
Makes sense cuz my pinion seal is leakin like a ***** so i starved them of oil.
ring and pinion looked okay though suprisingly.
Hopefully the pinion bearing is okay... if not... its time to just re-do the whole thing.
