I am a little confused. If you and your buddy did it last year than how do you not know how to adjust backlash. The backlash will differ between gear manufacturers. When my buddy and I installed my Strange gear the backlash was supposed to be set between .008 to .012. We set the backlash at .010. You adjust backlash by adding or subtracting shims. If you don't adjust backlash you more likely to shear some teeth off the pinion or ring gear. Also the rearend will whine like crazy.

Adjusting the backlash is done by removing shims from one side and installing that same thickness on the other, this moves the ring closer (tighter backlash) or farther (looser backlash) to the pinion. Its important that you put what ever you take out of one side into the other or you will mess your preload all up.
