Welding on a rear. Good/ bad?

Welding on a rear. Good/ bad?
I have a 10 bolt posi with 4:10 gears. Need to fixe the leaf spring mounts (cracked). Can i weld on the axle tubes without damaging any bearings or anything. Should i drain the fluid?
