Weird 4L60E behavior after rebuild
Weird 4L60E behavior after rebuild
I just got the trans rebuilt in my '95 z28 and had a new Edge 3000rpm converter to go along with it.
The problem I'm having is it seems to be jumping out of overdrive after the converter disengages, unless I continue to give it throttle.
I'll be cruising at 65mph, I'll lift off the gas pedal and tap the brake, then the rpms drop to 1000-1200rpm then the converter will lockup again and it'll go back to the normal RPM for the speed.
If I lightly apply the brakes at that speed while keeping my foot on the gas pedal, the RPM's jump a little when the converter disengages.
It shifts just fine from 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4.
What would cause the transmission to slip out of gear when I let off the gas and the lock-up converter disengages?

The converter is supposed to unlock when you tap the brake....but should stay locked when you let off the gas. Just a little FYI...I'm not quite sure what you mean as far as the transmission popping out of gear.
Re: Weird 4L60E behavior after rebuild
It just feels like it's dropping out of gear when the lock-up converter disengages.
On datamaster, it shows the rpm's dropping to 1000-1200rpm after the converter disengages and it just feels like theres no load on the engine. With 3.73 gears, shouldn't the car be around 2200rpm at 60mph while in overdrive? Any idea why would it drop to 1200rpm at 60mph when the lock-up converter disengages? or is this normal
Thanks for the help

Re: Weird 4L60E behavior after rebuild
yep it does engage shortly after I get back on the gas, it just seemed odd to me that it droped near idle when I was going that fast.
Thanks dude, I feel better now

Re: Weird 4L60E behavior after rebuild
If it drops this much and it should have not done this before the rebuild, then the overrun assembly (overrun clutches, sprag, & overrun hub) is not working as it should. It should not fall down to an idle.

damn that sucks, I'll give the guy a call that built it for me and discuss it with him
What would cause this problem after a fresh rebuild?
Thanks for the help

I hate to disagree with you but maybe there is some miscomunications here.. But if you have a high stall converter, it isn't locked, and you are at rpm's les then the designated stall speed with no load on the tranny then it should drop down to about 1200 RPM's, it is just as if you were rolling slowly to a stop.. Give it a shot and you will notice that before your car comes to a stop in it will be at about 1200 RPM's, then once you stop it drops the the preset idle for your gear selection.
