weird 1-2 shift, 700r4

the 1-2 shift in my 700 is bad, when it shifts at WOT there is a bit of a flare and then it rather slowly shifts into 2nd, at partial throttle it does the same thing but to a much lesser extent. all of the other shifts are ok, but not as good as the th350 i used to have in there. could this be caused by a bad spring bleeding off pressure? the fluid looked and smelled good, and there was no crap in the pan.
is there any chance this could be fixed without pulling the tranny?
i estimate my motor to make about 280hp, is this enough to kill an older 700rr (pre-87 or whenever they made some changes)?
Thanks!

If you have not burned the 2-4 band yet, you could add a Corvette servo, and a larger main & intermediate boost valves. This "might" solve the problem. If it does not, you will have to go into the transmission to solve this, as the 2-4 band & the reverse input drum will need to be replaced at a minimum. If you have to go into it, then locate a 1988 & up transmission to start with. These are a better transmission to start with for a performance buildup.

How do you use a 98 tranny in a 700r4 car?

Re: weird 1-2 shift, 700r4

it was a broken 1-2 accumulator spring, picked up a new one from a local trans shop along with a 'vette servo. put the new spring in now it shifts great at partial throttle but still has a slight slipping feeling at wot though. the 2-3 shift is great at all throttle openings. the 'vette servo has yet to go in becaus i'm having a hell of a time getting the lock ring off of the cover.

Edit: do larger boost and intermediate valves come in a transgo shift kit? also is the transgo servo different from a gm 'vette servo?

The Corvette servo will help out, once you get it in. The servo from Trans-Go is the Corvette servo. Depending on which kit you get, they can come with the larger boost valves. The "modified" Trans-Go Performance Shift kit comes with the larger boost valves, Corvette servo, the accumulation for 2nd gear (smooth part throttle shifts), Torlon replacement checkballs, etc.
