Ways to know your trans is slipping?

I have alot of modifications done to my car. But my ET is still slow for what i've got done to the car. The engine seems to be running fine..Just the ocasional puff of smoke when I punch it. I could tell worth a damn if my trans was slipping because I am used to driving a the same mods I have running low 12's or even high 11's . I can't honastly tell if its slipping or not? I was just curiouse what are sings of the 4l60e dieing out? I know that if I change to a 400 I can gain at least .5 tenths on the 1/4. At least some of my buddies at speed shops said that. But I don't understand why my car is runing the way it is..

Top end the car doesn't seem to have the spunk it should. It makes all the loud noise and whatnot and redlines and shifts. But doesn't seem to want to move. The fastest ET speed i've had is 109. But from what i've seen its like I should have so much more. Thats why I'm starting to question my trans. So if anybody could tell me some signs of why this going on I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Mine used to hit the rev limiter a few time before going into next gear... that's a good sign that the tranny is slipping... slow soft shifts, that take a while to engange the next gear instead being instant and crisp.. after a few runs, it died completely... got it overhauled and it's slipping one again

Hitting the revlimiter on shifts is the best way to see, check your tranny fluid too if it gets a couple quarts low you can get a little slipping. Your trap doesn't seem low for a 12.5, switching to a th400 isn't really going to help you any may even slow you down. They're a lot more inefficient and really only need to be run in high hp apps.

Hmm...then if its not the 400? What trans is supposed to give you more tenths off your time? I know there was some alternative to the 4l60e...I'm talking realistically too...not " Oh get a power glide" or somthing like that.

Just stick with the stock trans and build it. A th-400 isn't going to take time off, a lot of people pick up time with them because they end up running a higher stall and a t-brake. If your not beyond the limit of a stock built trans then keep it.
