Visual signs a synchro is dead...
When I have the synchro sitting in front of me out of the T56 is it obvious if it's shot?
Am I just looking for worn down teeth or are there other signs that it needs replaced?

Aside from visually inspecting the teeth, to see if they're worn, burred, etc., there is also a measurement spec, something like .020" gap, when you place the synchro ring onto the gear ... the distance between the ring and the nearest face on the gear. Basically, what you're trying to measure is if the paper/carbon material of the synchro ring is worn too thin. If, when you place the synchro ring onto the gear (over the "cone"), it can press tightly against the gear face, then it's worn out. Like I said, I believe the book called for a .020" gap
