Upgrading read axle to a 3.73 posi, need help...
so i went down to this local custom shop to get some pricing on some upgrades that i can't do myslef, mainly welded SFCs and upgrading my rear. so here i am thinking that it'll only cost about 350 for the auburn 3.73 posi (was told to go auburn) and about 200 for the install. well the guy there says my stock 7.5 bolt housing is too small and i need to upgrade some other stuff to get it running good. so the end price comes to 800 for parts and 300 for the install from the guy, my question is does 1100 sound like too much or is that in the ball park? and also is there a way i can get this 3.73 posi setup without spending 1100 but still getting something decent?

Sounds like you have the small carrier 2.73 rear end. I can't see spending much money on the ten bolt rear end because there's an invisible grenade waiting to go off in that housing. The more power you add the shorter the fuse.

Maybe some others will chime in too...
Bottom line to answer your question: It is not necessary to spend that much to put in 3.73 gears. If the $1100 means you get a 12 bolt housing, sounds like a great deal.
I was quoted $230 to install a 3.73 gear that I bought myself for about $170. Add in oil, gasket etc and $500 will cover it. This does not include changing to the larger carrier. This is a cheap route to go assuming you have a useable Torsen. Must you buy a posi unit? From what I have experienced/heard/read a ten bolt rear end may, but cannot be expected to last under any racing conditions regardless of what type of posi unit. Maybe you already have considered this but take into account your future plans for the car.

He has to change his carrier probably and a new posi (good one) is like 400bucks.....gears 200 and install 250.....that equals 950.
If you are into doing burn-outs i would do the 12-bolt Not worth riskings it

i was also told that i could try finding a rear axle off ebay that came stock with posi, but it wouldn't have 3.73s would it? and i didn't really get into it too much about what my true purpose was with him but i wanna be able to do donuts intead of peg leggers and leave lots of nice tread everywhere. and i doubt that i'll ever get a 305 up to 400rwp and slicks are too expensive so i dont have to worry about that. it just sucks cuz i thought i could get it done cheaper but i guess so is life. anyways thankx for the info guys!

its not that you have to pay to play, its that you have to pay to play AND still be able to come back home after its all done. but yea as long as i'm sure i'm not getting ripped off or having anything unneccesary done i guess its okay. now where to find 1100 dollars...
