You are right . Me , and 2 of my friends with 98-99 LS1's are having probs with thrid gear . Grinds like Madd and pops out of gear. Every transmission guy I have talked to said its was the sync's . . I talked to my best friend uncle who rebuilds them and he said the labor is cloes to the same as rebuilding it to replace the snyc's . So If you fix ther sync , you may as well rebuild . I am going ahead and having mine rebuilt . WIth parts and labor its costing me 800 bucks . For everything , except clutch . " I already had that " If you was local I could get ya a deal .

I started this thread in september of 2003! AL was fine with it then because I wasnt getting responses in the drivetrain forum. Not my fault it was brought back from the dead.

Anyway, yeah I have now found out that it is my syncro, which sucks because it will cost a good chunk of $$ to fix.
