Trouble getting into Reverse

This problem just started tonight. I went out tonight to wash my car, and washed it as normal. All worked well on the way there. I finished washing my car and everything was fine then too. I noticed that my SES light came on on the ride home. I get home to my garage and I tried to put my car in reverse but the shifter wouldn't move over into reverse. I had to really force it to get it to move over to the right, then it went into reverse without any problems. I'm not sure if the SES light has anything to do with my reverse problem, I don't have a scanner. What do you guys think it could be? It take a lot of effort to push it to the right, but pushing up towards the front of the car to get into reverse is normal. Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

This is on a 96 Z with a T-56.

Could this be the reverse lockout? I was told that it could be that. Where is this device located? Thanks.

Re: Trouble getting into Reverse

If you were to take the shifter out, you would see it. It is a plunger that acts as a positive stop and should retract at a low enough speed and definately at a stop. Sounds like yours isn't obviously. Not sure how hard it would be to change it out while the tranny is in the car.
