Transmission troubles T-56
Transmission troubles T-56
I have a '97 Camaro SS LT1 with 115K miles on it, and it looks like my clutch went. What's odd is that instead if just slipping, it decided it didn't want to disengage the motor and tranny. I could only get my car into gear from a stop if I turned off the engine, but I could change gears by power shifting. Once the car was in gear it drove OK. I was able to drive it home a few miles from college where the problem started, and then I took it around the corner to a transmission shop.
They let me know already that the clutch is history, and they are checking to see what else might be up. I think something in the clutch's hydraulic system went haywire. I checked the master cylinder reservior when I got home, and there was plenty of fluid there. I didn't get a chance to check the slave cylinder, since it was late, and from what I understand its buried inside the housing anyway, so I really don't have the means to get in there and check.
Anyone else here have a similar experience?

was the clutch actually slipping? if the car is locked in gear and stalls when you come to a stop, the clutch is not disengaging. probably a throw-out bearing problem. if it drives and operates fine and doesn't want to go into gear, you're looking at syncrhonizers and the assembly.
It turns out that my slave cylinder went out, and as a result my clutch was fried too. I got them replaced, and it works great now. In fact, the clutch feels much lighter than it did before. It'll take some getting used to.
