Transmission Question

I have a 1995 Z28 with a automatic transmission. I was wondering is it possible to transplant a V6 5 speed into an LT1? They are so much cheaper and easier to find. I really want a manual and the car was cheap and is a solid project. Any help would be great.

Re: Transmission Question

Might be possible, but it won't hold up to the power of the LT1, so you likely won't find much info on doing it.

Re: Transmission Question

Thanks. Looking for a cruiser so not looking for big power out of the LT1. You think if it's built right it would work??

Re: Transmission Question

The T5 is so weak, GM would not use it behind the L98 350 V8 in the 3rd Gens. That engine was only available with a 700R4 automatic. There are versions of the T5 available, but they will cost you as much as a T56.

Then you would have to address the clutch issue. The LT1/T56 combo uses a one-of-kind "pull back" clutch design, so you would have to sort out that problem.

Re: Transmission Question

OP

if you can find one from a donor car (junkyard) that would be your best bet. Given it would be at least a 20 year old tranny not likely driven by your grandmother it would need some work if not a complete rebuild

if you did find a donor car, everything would be on it you need to do the A4 to T56 swap

for example (although not cheap $)

93 97 Camaro Firebird LT1 Tremec T56 6 Speed Manual Conversion Kit Complete Used | eBay

I would stay away from the 93 as it is only rated at 400 ft lbs of TQ. 94-97 are 450 ft lbs. Although the 93 does have a lower 1st gear

Re: Transmission Question

It would almost certainly be less expensive to sell your car and buy one with a T56.
