Transmission options

Which would you do. Have your friend rebuild your 4L60E, for free, just the cost of parts (~$450), and the parts that I want in there. Downside, no warrenty, and he has only done it twice on a 4L60E.

Or, pay a shop $840 to rebuild (allready out of car), but with the parts he wants (performance rebuild), some local F-body guys running this transmission with luck, and a 1 year warrenty.

From my personal experience: Do it RIGHT the first time.

If your friend does goo work, and you trust him, that's fine. But if you have any doubts, paying more to have it done right the first time is the way to go. It will save you money, loss of use, and the stress that comes from getting the transmission done twice.

Paying an extra $400 now could save you another $840 in the future

Or you can really do it right and have ProBuilt Automatics build you one to your spec, worth checking out:

Re: Transmission options

I'd rather be pi$$ed off with a shop, and not my buddy, if the tranny ever had problems after the rebuild. It's the 1 piece in my car that I'm afraid is going to let me down one day, but I'm prepared (or preparing?) to fix it right, if/when the time comes.

For the difference between ~$450 and ~$850, considering the long-term investment, and the demand you will (likely?) put on your car, I'd spend the extra few bucks for the peace of mind and the warranty (but this is no slag against your buddy ... if he really knows what he's doing, and you trust him, then by all means, go that route and save a few $$$ ).

I have a new option. The builder said he would still give e a 1 year warrenty if I supplied the parts, so I might buy the rebuild kit from Probuilt and have him build it. The rebuild kits says it's good to ~650hp. How does that sound?

I don't like the idea of buying a whole new transmission when I have a perfectly good one right here.
