Tranny woes.. or normal? (VIDEO)

I posted this on the LS1 board, but checking around I might get better bites out here.

I bought my car a few weeks ago.. basically, when I'm giving it anything past 30% throttle or so, I hear a "claking". It sounds like something t/o bearing-ish, or something just moving around/banging against the shifter. Kind of like a marble rolling around, but a CONSTANT noise. Only happens when getting on it.

I noticed today the clutch fluid was EMPTY. I refilled it and things seem to be working alright.. Where is the slave cylinder located, so I can see if its leaking at all? I've noticed, when pushing the clutch pedal in (works fine from what I can tell.. I can smoothly transition between all the gears) about 75% of it is firm, but the last 25% is kind of loose.. like its just sitting there. Stock clutch I'm assuming, 65k~ miles.

I've recently changed the tranny mount to a poly one, which I'm assuming explains the following.. but better check just in case: When putting the car into gear, with the clutch in, I feel the car shift into that gear.. I feel it in the entire car. Its not a klunk or anything, but its noticable.

Thanks in advance guys.. hopefully all these things are in my head/common things.. better safe than sorry, though.

What's next to your cig. lighter?

If I were you, I'd start going through a process of elimination. Check to make sure there's nothing in the ashtray (ie loose change), feel the center console for vibrations, apply a little pressure in areas that may be loose to see if you can stop the clicking, etc. If you can't narrow it down, pull the console and see if it goes away or gets louder. To do that, you need to pull the ashtray and remove the screws there and inside the arm rest (under change holder too). It'll slide up, back and out. Don't forget the shifter ball too.

Thats the RF bass controller. Its definitely clicking directly from the shifter, I've narrowed it down.. ontop of the video not transfering the sound like it should. Its alot more distinct. You KNOW its coming from there, and you can even feel it. It goes away slightly when theres pressure going against it (opposite from the exit of the gate, as if holding it back)

It has a Hurst shifter.. the ones that came on the SSes from the factory. I'm not sure if these don't have an added sound barrier.. but I remember my '96 making the same noise with a Pro 5.0.

I'd pull the armrest/console and drive it with just the shifter to see if you can narrow it down further. Just be smart about it as you'll be driving with a hole exposed to the road right next to you.

It could be a loose bolt or something simple like that....or it could be internal trans, which I hate to say is not so simple and not so cheap.

My car is doing the same thing now. When I get on it at about 2500 rpms, it will make this click noise. I can feel the shifter moving when this happens. I had my tranny rebuilt, but the problem still remains. I also changed shifters from the stock shifter to a pro 5.0 shifter... still have the same problem. Anyone else have ideas?

Actually having driven more than a dozen M6 cars with aftermarket shifters, this sound is normal. I remember being freaked out a little when I did my first shifter swap from my factory one to my Hurst. They are simply just a little more noisy than the stock shifters. I woulnd't concern myself with it.

BTW, I had to laugh when I heard your girlfriend/wife/whatever say "Do you have to drive like an *** to get it to do it?" I am really lucky in that my wife is really into cars, but even she doesn't understand my obsession with it, let alone know how things work with it

That was the mom.. but the girlfriend is no better. She asks me why I'm pissed off and I'm like "Well, I've got air in my clutch fluid and I can't find the bleeder valve.. then while I was down there the torque arm bushing was shot.." and hes like "honey. honey. honey. I don't know what your talking about. stop." But then she talks about girl stuff like clothes and HS drama and I'm foaming at the mouth.

That is so funny because its to typical! My wife has an interest in learning about cars, but she is so short tempered at times I don't know where I get my patience to put up with her. A week ago I tell her "I'm going out to swap the winter wheels off the car to the summer ones", she says "I want to do it", I say "alright, its all yours..... Are you sure you know how?", the wife " YESS!!!". Not 5 minutes pass, and she asks "where do I need to jack the car up from?", after I show her and go back inside she comes back in after a minute and says "I was supposed to loosen the lug nuts before I raised it up, wasn't I?". At this point it was hard not to laugh, but I said "yes". 10 minutes later, she comes back in and says "I can't get the lug nuts loose", after I do it for her, I can't help but to say "I though you knew how to do this ", she was so pissed off she picked up my torque wrench and threw it on the concrete! At that point of imagining picking her up and throwing her on the concrete, I took a deep breath and asked her with a very sarcastic smile if she would please go inside while I finished the job. After a less than pleasant exchange of words, she went back inside where she should have been the whole time.

Sorry to go off here, it just proves my theory of girls and cars with issues, or in need of some mechanical help, just don't mix well in most cases.

"Uhh.. how long has your car been making this noise?" Her: "I dunno a couple weeks or so. I just turn the radio up louder."

I asked my aunt if she checked the oil and she said "Is that near where you put the gas in?"

My mom blew the engine in her car and shes like "No, I think it just needs gas.. it just stopped."

But I've got a good girlfriend.. she admits guys are better, and she knows cars are my domain and clothes and girl stuff is hers.
